Position Summary

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Support Services, the Academic Advisor/Assistant Learning Specialist is dedicated to assisting student-athletes by providing academic support in accordance with NCAA, conference, and university requirements. This position will work closely with the Learning Specialist in assisting student-athletes to navigate their academic career at San Diego State University by providing general academic support to include advisement of institutional, conference, and NCAA requirements, major and course selection, campus resources, and individualized academic support as needed for designated student-athletes. The Academic Advisor/Assistant Learning Specialist will be trained to devise an integrated plan to include tutoring, writing support, time management, and campus resources in order to maximize the student-athlete's academic success. This plan will include regular communication with the student-athletes via in-person meetings, drop-in visits, and email. Weekly progress reports will be submitted to appropriate stakeholders.  The Academic Advisor/Assistant Learning Specialist will coordinate and assist with the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services staff and campus resources to best meet the academic needs of student-athletes.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2024 with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. 

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University.  Currently, there are 19 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department.  The offices include the following:  The Aztec Club, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, Corporate Sales, Development, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.

Student-Athlete Academic Support Services provides a wide variety of professional services and activities ranging from pre-admission guidance and diagnostic testing to admission to the University, through post-graduation.  The purpose of the program's services and activities is to assist and support student-athletes in achieving high academic success and personal integrity while progressing toward a degree objective.  Services and activities include a specialized athlete orientation, pre-admission counseling, referrals to campus resources, academic improvement sessions, tutoring, and individual academic, competency, and eligibility advising and guidance.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Key Qualifications

  • Compliance with all NCAA, conference, and San Diego State University rules, policies and procedures is of paramount importance to the university.  All position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.
  • Skills in advising, tutoring, collecting and analyzing data, curriculum advising, and program development. 
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective relationships with administration, faculty, coaches, parents, student-athletes, constituents within the university, and the university community.
  • Master's or post-graduate degree in a related field is preferred. 
  • Experience working in a Division I athletic department advising/tutoring/mentoring student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NCAA initial and continuing eligibility requirements. 
  • Previous experience teaching. 
  • Previous experience with ACS and GradesFirst.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends and travel.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,764 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,764 - $4,604 per month.
