Job Summary:Academic Advisor to provide academic advising and academic success outreach to undergraduate students pursuing baccalaureate and associate degrees offered at Miami University Regionals. This includes academic planning, connecting advisees with appropriate university resources, communicating relevant information verbally and electronically, and teaching.
Duties/Physical Demands:Duties include but are not limited to:
Assigned to Miami Regionals first and second-year students in a career community, pre-major, or in the exploratory stage of their college experience.
Provide individualized, holistic support for undergraduate students through caseload advising, and proactive nudges focused on retention.
Work with students to explore their options, serving students through course selection and providing appropriate referrals.
Conduct academic interventions and provide outreach efforts focused on retention and academic success.
Assist students with petition processes for academic actions and transfer credits.
Participate in academic advising services with the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration program (SOAR) by assisting new and transfer students with the transition to college.
Serve as an academic advising resource for faculty and faculty advisors, as well as campus partners.
Participate in campus events and activities illustrating a commitment to students sense of belonging and their success at Miami University.
Partner with Academic Advisors across the University to ensure consistency in advising.
Use University systems to document advising sessions and develop practices for consistently following up with students; effectively utilize multiple modalities for student interaction, including phone and email, and for meetings with students, including in-person, phone, and interactive video conferencing (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).
Build effective working relationships and open communication across socio-cultural differences with students, staff, faculty, and University leadership; communicate effectively in writing and verbally across campus constituents.
Instruct up to three credit hours per term of student success course work, such as UNV 101: I am Miami.
Serve on committees/working groups as needed.
Master's degree, which must be earned by the appointment date.
Minimum six (6) months of full-time advising experience in a university or college setting, including academic, career, study abroad, or other related areas. Experience gained during a related graduate program can apply (graduate experience is prorated; 1 semester of an assistantship is equivalent to 2.25 months of full-time experience).
Consideration may be given to candidates with a master's degree in academic advising, higher education administration, college student personnel, psychological counseling, student affairs, or a related field. Understanding of higher education retention, advising, and student development theories, including the purpose and advantages of a liberal arts education. Excellent written and oral communication (including public speaking), interpersonal, collaborative skills, organization, and technological skills. Experience with tools such as: Banner, uAchieve (degree audits), Student Success Collaborative (Navigate), Oracle Business Intelligence, and Transferology.Com and other predictive analytics and SIS systems and a capacity to learn and understand technology/software programs. Experience working with at-risk, diverse student populations. A desire to work in a position that requires proactive and student-centered approaches and an interest in ongoing professional development.
