Mission Graduates is a nonprofit organization that increases the number of K-12 students in San Francisco's Mission District who are prepared for and complete a college education. We work towards fulfilling our mission through a wide range of after-school support services that serve over 3,700 children, youth and families each year. Our vision is to transform the culture of our neighborhood so that college becomes the expectation for Mission families, rather than the exception.
Position Overview: This position requires someone to divide their time evenly between supporting student leadership and excellence and facilitating more effective family engagement. In both cases, the position will focus specifically on supporting African American students and parents at Bessie Carmichael. This position will report directly to the Beacon Director at Everett Middle School. In addition, they will receive consultation and support from other staff at Bessie Carmichael, including the Principal, Assistant Principal and others.
As AAPAC and Academic Support Specialist this position will have the following responsibilities:
- Support Leadership and Academic Achievement opportunities for African American students at Everett
- Start and maintain a Black Student Union that meets during lunch time
- Provide support to Bessie Carmichael and community partner staff that are mentoring African American students, including organizing events and field trips and ensuring communication with families
- Lead girls/boys group and one on one support for specific students
Assist the Beacon with supervising youth, administrative tasks & staff development
- Attend weekly staff meetings and school meetings as needed
- Support After School Staff, as capacity allows, and be able to fill in for classes when needed
- Attend C.A.R.E team meetings, grade level meetings, Family Engagement Team meetings, and district AAPAC meetings
- Attend scheduled Beacon Initiative, Staff development events and meetings
- Plan and facilitate an enrichment club and/or recreational activity
- push-in support for African American students during the school day hours
- Attend and supervise after school field trips
Build cultural and educational bridges with students and their families
- Support School-Family Communication, including events, Black Student Union updates, and after school activities to African American families
- Provide 1-on-1 resource and referral support to African American families, as needed and capacity permitting (in order to accomplish this, the FEC must maintain an updated list of community resources to which to refer families)
- Support individual African American parent leaders to participate in school decision-making groups such as School Site Council and/ or PTA
- Support collaboration/communication between Bessie teachers and African American families of students receiving additional support (IEPs, additional tutoring support)
- Planning and Coordinating AAPAC meetings monthly, hosting the Black Excellence Dinner, and Assembly acknowledging Black History Month
- Some evening meetings (AAPAC, Student Site Council meetings, and events)
Family Engagement Capacity-building and Professional Development Support for Bessie Beacon Staff
- Support after school program and daytime teachers/staff with strategies for Socio-Emotional Learning and supporting African American students and families
- As part of the school's Family Engagement Team, discuss issues concerning individual families or groups of families, and collectively plan and implement different family engagement activities (including events and outreach campaigns)
Required Qualifications
- Qualified applicants must have work experience or lived experience in African American parent communities
- Must be a strong independent worker and demonstrate excellent strategic analysis
- Must have excellent organizational and time management skills
- Must have experience working in a culturally and linguistically diverse environment and with diverse populations
- Must have experience providing trainings and/or workshops for adults
- Must have BA or BS or experience
- Current CPR certification (or attained within 2 months of employment)
- TB test clearance mandatory prior to hire
- Some weekends and evenings required
$22 - $24 an hour
