Type: Temporary Part-time, paid position (March 4, 2023 - July 26, 2024)
Division: Rocket Mortgage Classic
Reports to: Operations Manager & Tournament Services Director
Overview
Intersport, a leader in sports, entertainment, and lifestyle marketing and media for over three decades, provides expertise in the areas of:
  • Agency Services: brand consulting, creative, content production, digital, experiential marketing field marketing, hospitality, social media marketing, and sponsorship consulting
  • Properties - owned-and-operated live sports and lifestyle events and media assets airing on broadcast and digital networks

Specifically, Intersport is the official management firm (sales, marketing, and operations) of Detroit's annual PGA TOUR event, the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which debuted in June of 2019. Intersport is seeking to add smart and driven aspiring sports management professionals as interns for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, held June 24 - June 30, 2024, at the Detroit Golf Club. This is a paid internship and candidates are eligible for overtime pay (time and a half) for any hours over 40 a week.
The Tournament Office is a fast-paced working environment. Tournament Interns must have the ability to work under pressure and handle many tasks at one time. Each day brings new challenges, and interns must have top-notch organizational and communication skills. On a daily basis, the intern will find themselves working in a typical office environment as well as significant work done in exterior environs. The ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting boxes and manual labor may be required at times. In the weeks leading up to the Tournament, the intern will work at least (20) hours work weeks; however, as we grow closer to the Tournament, work weeks will lengthen to eighty-plus hours (80+) and will include early mornings, evenings, and several weekends.
The Business Operations intern assists the Intersport Tournament Team with the on-course operations and tournament services of the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, including advance preparations, Tournament week responsibilities, and post-event breakdown.
Responsibilities
General
  • Embody and reflect Intersport's performance-based culture and commits him/herself and team to the highest standards for all agency work
  • Work effectively with cross-functional teams to deliver executional excellence

Tournament Support
  • Assist fellow team members in providing thought leadership and guidance for the Rocket Mortgage Classic PGA TOUR event
  • Assist in a variety of matters for project management including:
    • Internal meetings: planning sessions and brainstorms
    • External meetings: with stakeholders, partners, and vendors
    • Due diligence, desk research, and reporting
    • Project management and cross-department coordination

Operations Support
  • Acquire knowledge of all general aspects of the Tournament operations plan in order to answer general questions
  • Assist the operations and accounting team with billing and financial tracking of orders, create purchase orders and track received invoices throughout the duration of the internship
  • Organize electronic filing
  • Take and distribute accurate notes for all operations vendor meetings and assist with the coordination of vendor arrivals to the site
  • Help to maintain accurate Tournament equipment lists
  • Manage, track, and sort incoming shipments and packages
  • Manage the Operations Trailer and maintain office supplies and replenish as necessary
  • Help manage and track merchandise purchases
  • Assist Tournament Services Team with set-up of Player and Caddie Services, Volunteer Uniform Pick-Up, Volunteer Headquarters, and Tournament/PGA TOUR On-Site Offices
  • Assist vendors and Tournament staff with tear-down and clean-up procedures following the completion of the Tournament
  • Assist other departments with support, as necessary

Qualifications
  • Able to work long and strenuous hours (40 - 100+ hour work weeks) including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Able to lift heavy items (furniture, copiers, coolers, boxes, product, etc.) (50+lbs)
  • Must remain flexible with an ever-changing, fast-paced environment
  • Able to think logically and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Exceptional work ethic and organizational skills
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail and process orientated while demonstrating expansive thinking
  • Flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Golf knowledge or experience is preferred, but not required
  • Part-time availability in early 2024 (20-35 hours/week) and full availability (40+ hours/week) starting by May 30, 2024.
  • Provide own food, housing and reliable transportation to Intersport Office and Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan for all scheduled in-person hours
  • Priority will be given to applicants who can be in person for the entire internship, but we encourage all applicants to apply
  • International applicants must have all visas and employment authorizations prior to the start of internship
