Job description

Description
Are you searching for an internship experience that will include impactful engineering work?
Does making meaningful contributions to projects that span from submarines to surface ships, UAVs, aircraft, missiles, autonomous submarines, advanced manufacturing devices, to wearables and spacecraft sound like a dream job?
If so, and if you're pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Electrical or Computer Engineering we'd love to have you join our team!
We are seeking talented team members to help us design, analyze, test and deploy pioneering mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems or provide insight to the physical processes that define the behaviors of physical systems. As an intern you will be working alongside and learning from a team of passionate engineers while contributing to exciting projects that support supporting organizations such as the US Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and NASA. Our team strives to deliver robust mechanical solutions; apply innovative multiscale modeling techniques that give insight into the most significant length and time scales; and develop, apply, and maintain deep expertise in electrical engineering and embedded systems to APL's most difficult problems. Our team values leadership and communication skills and we cultivate an environment of collaboration.
As a member of our team, depending on your expertise...

  • Your primary responsibility will either be the computer-aided design of mechanical, mechatronic, robotic, and electromechanical systems; running computational simulations and performing analysis; or designing embedded electronics, encompassing both hardware and software, and the engineering of entire systems.
  • You will work with and actively collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists on a daily basis.
  • In coordination with team members with a variety of expertise, and depending upon the task, you will 3D print your models or initiate the machining of parts; you will propose and develop new modeling frameworks for predicting the response of sophisticated systems to conditions including but not limited to mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electromagnetic stimulus; or you will capture the requirements, design circuits, select components, and validate your work through modeling and simulation.
  • You will order the necessary hardware to assemble your designs, plus perform the assembly and testing yourself; or test at different stages and lead the integration of your embedded electronics into the larger systems.
  • You will showcase your work during design reviews and produce essential documentation to communicate results and ideas to team members.
  • You will generate the files and documentation necessary to facilitate the fabrication of your designs and operation of your designs.
  • Your innovative solutions to our country's most challenging problems will be highly sought after, and brainstorming will be a regular part of your job.

Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have a passion for CAD and practical experience using CAD software; have a passion for developing physics-based simulations and applying data analysis to solve problems; have experience in embedded hardware and software development, as well as the design and testing of hardware/software systems; or have experience designing and prototyping electronic circuitry that employs FPGAs, DSP processors, microcontrollers, sensors, and power supplies, through class projects, graduate research, or previous internships.
  • Have scientific/engineering programming experience or related coursework, the ability to work in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, Python, FORTRAN and VHDL or Verilog, or familiarity with modeling and simulation tools like SPICE, MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Have experience with test and measurement equipment used in mechanical or electronic systems acquired through class projects, research, or internships.
  • Have excellent communication skills, the ability to document and publish designs and results, and effective multitasking abilities.
  • Are able to acquire an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately acquire a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
  • Are pursuing dual degrees or have experience in electrical or computer engineering.
  • Have CAD experience in either SolidWorks or Creo Parametric.
  • Have experience in performing large-scale simulations on high performance computing systems.
  • Have experience using LS-Dyna or other finite element analysis software packages.
  • Have a proven ability to contribute to team-based software development.
  • Have a fundamental understanding of the underlying physical phenomena driving material properties.
  • Have experience with Linux and real-time operating systems.
  • Are proficient in Python, MATLAB, and Digital Signal Processing.
  • Have the ability to design and simulate analog circuits.
  • Are familiar with low-power microcontrollers, including ARM processors.
  • Have experience with dynamic systems controls and mechanism design.
  • Have previous experience in PCB design (Altium, Eagle, etc.).
  • Have experience with asynchronous and/or parallel programming, client-server architectures (Express, FastAPI, etc.), and/or programming common microcontrollers (STM, ESP, PIC, ATMEL, etc.).
