Parks and Recreation - Recreation Leader I - Groundskeeper (Temporary, Part-Time) - Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary

If you enjoy working outdoors around native wildlife and have maintenance and groundskeeping skills, you will love working at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. Support the community and the zoo's mission statement of Teaching Responsible Behavior Toward All Animals by maintaining walkways, landscaping, buildings, and committing to cleanliness. Groundskeepers are under the direct supervision of the Senior Program Coordinator and Lead Groundskeeper. This employee should be self-motivated, detailed oriented, able to follow direction, have the ability to work independently and observe safe work practices.

Salary: $16 per hour

Description: Under direct supervision of permanent staff and lead groundskeeper, perform a variety of duties related to grounds cleaning/plant care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Pick up litter in and around the zoo.
• Check and empty trash.
• Clean, sweep, and wash visitor pathways.
• Light landscaping, gardening, and watering of plants. Occasionally larger landscaping projects and hardscape.
• Minor maintenance and repair tasks (changing a lock, painting a fence, replacing damaged signs, etc)
• Clean/organize and maintain staff and public areas (such as benches, picnic areas, and windows).
• Assist in small projects like building enrichment, platforms for the animals, and assembling equipment.

Skills: Operating a variety of basic hand and power tools safely and correctly, customer service principles and practices, working safely around animals, and sanitation and disinfection techniques.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor, frequent standing, walking, or driving; frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, and squatting. (2) Lifting: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, reaching, hand/shoulder/elbow movements. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker and public contact; frequent working alone and independent. (7) Environment: frequent exposure to outside elements (sun, wind, rain).

Schedule and Pay

• Looking for availability Friday – Sunday, may work additional days if desired
• Part-time positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits, and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.

Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent. Basic to more complex landscape or maintenance experience preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Special Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by date of hire. Must be able to pass drug testing and a physical.

The successful candidate is made a conditional offer subject to a background check, which requires DOJ fingerprint clearance and a pre-employment physical, including screening for drug and alcohol use. The City follows federal law; candidates testing positive for THC do not pass the background screening.
