Position Information

There are two (2) current vacancies with additional anticipated openings at the Honolulu Zoo in the Mammals, Birds, and Reptiles Sections. Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Independently performing routine duties in the day-to-day care of animals living in the zoo;
  • Maintaining animal habitats, enclosures, and facilities, to include cleaning animal cages and enclosures (e.g., scrubbing, disinfecting, sweeping, hosing, and removing manure), maintaining landscaping in and around animal enclosures with the use of various powered tools (e.g., weed wackers, mowers, chainsaws, etc.), and assisting in the renovation/restoration of animal habitats
  • Preparing and measuring food and distributing and placing food in assigned animal enclosures;
  • Observing animals closely and immediately reporting any unusual behavior, symptoms of illness or injury in animals, or unusual condition in the enclosures;
  • Assisting in disease control, treatment, and care of sick and injured animals, and in the care and rearing of orphaned animals;
  • Participating in public education and animal enrichment and training programs;
  • Following and enforcing safety regulations;
  • Assisting in the recapture of animals and other emergencies involving animals;
  • Providing information to zoo visitors;
  • Preparing daily reports and assisting in maintaining health and inventory records of animals;
  • Assisting in the control and eradication of pests and rodents; and
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements: These positions will require shift work on any given day of the week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays with varying days off. Positions may involve heavy lifting. Positions also involve working in outdoor conditions with exposure to the elements, including but not limited to: dust, water, hot and humid climate, and full sun.
Qualification for Zoo Animal Keeper I positions will depend on your work experience and the type(s) of ZOO ANIMALs you have worked with. For example, if you have sufficient experience working with birds, you will qualify for positions in the Birds section. Your name will be placed on an eligible list for the specialty area(s) that you qualify for. This list may be used to fill current and future vacancies in this department.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care of ZOO ANIMALs.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of methods of caring, feeding, and watering a wide variety of zooanimals; behavior traits of a wide variety of animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects) and the ability to follow oral and written instructions; keep records; apply safety precautions involved in the exhibition of ZOO ANIMALs; enforce zoo regulations and detect unusual behavior or condition of animals.
Qualification for Zoo Animal Keeper I positions will depend on your work experience and the type(s) of ZOO ANIMALs you have worked with. To qualify for a specific specialty area, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care, propagation, and public display of ZOO ANIMALs belonging to the specific area.
Zoo Animal Keeper I positions at the Honolulu Zoo are typically assigned to the following areas:
