POSITION SUMMARY:
The Marathon County Social Services Department has an immediate opening for two (2) newly created positions. These, Limited Term Employment, Full-time positions, provide diverse support services to youth who are required to attend the Youth Opportunity Center and to their families. This position provides program support for youth with behavioral issues with the goal of providing learning opportunities, structure, and accountability for their actions. Services are provided in a variety of locations but predominantly at the Youth Opportunity Center and require direct supervision. Timely and thorough written case documentation is required. Duties include, primarily, providing supervision to youth when required to attend the center, providing established programming that can be psychoeducational or recreational in nature. This position teams closely with Social Work staff, community professionals, schools, and parents/guardians. Applicants must have an ability to engage youth and their families, understand youth behavioral and mental health challenges, remain calm and deescalate behavioral situations, develop learning opportunities for youth to reduce their risk factors and increase their prosocial and protective skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
An Associate’s Degree minimum, Bachelor’s Degree preferred, from an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in Social Work, Social Science, Sociology, Psychology or other related field. Previous experience working with youth and their families in an area related to mental health or delinquency preferred.
A valid driver's license and a driving record that meets County standards and maintain reliable transportation as needed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Provides direct supervision of youth who are attending the Youth Opportunity Center (YOC)
  • Redirect behavior and/or thinking errors using listening, interviewing and problem-solving techniques.
  • Provides transportation as needed to include picking up youth prior to the YOC opening or taking youth home after the YOC closes or to other appointments as needed.
  • Provides individual and group work, may help with schoolwork, or other assignments given by the youth’s Social Worker.
  • Adhere to schedule created for the day’s activities.
  • Operates a computer to produce reports, correspondence, and other typed material.
    • Accurately documents youth attendance.
    • Documents incident reports when needed that are reviewed with the Supervisor and shared with the Social Worker.
    • Documents activities that the youth participated in, overall behavior that day, and anything that needs to be brought to the Social Worker’s attention.
  • Communicate with parents about transportation and youth behaviors.
  • Collaborates with volunteers or other contracted agencies that may come to the YOC for youth interaction
  • Provides court testimony when required.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works extra hours as required.
  • Performs related work as directed and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of functions and services provided by the Social Services Department.
  • Knowledge of youth development
  • Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and de-escalation techniques.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently, apply standards and criteria, and exercise judgment in accordance with established program procedures.
  • Ability to conduct basic interviews by listening, observing, gathering facts, and recording facts accurately.
  • Ability to communicate with youth and their families in an empathetic manner, establish effective working relationships, and respond meaningfully to their needs.
  • Ability to effectively work with other agency staff and members of the community.
  • Ability to organize and maintain information and keep records and file documentation current.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Skill in operating a computer to complete data entry and word processing tasks.
COMPENSATION:
Starting hourly rate: $20.12 - $22.53 based on experience and qualifications. This casual position is not eligible for benefits.
