JOB SUMMARY
The Youth Services Officer performs specialized work associated with coordinating activities between the Juvenile Court and juveniles and families in delinquent and unruly cases. Additionally, the incumbent's duties include supervising a caseload of juveniles on probation in order to ensure probationary rules and court orders are followed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts intakes by receiving and examining complaints and allegations of delinquency and unruly behavior for the purpose of considering the commencement of proceedings;
  • Supervises a caseload of juveniles placed on court probation in order to ensure adherence with rules of probation and orders of the Juvenile Court;
  • Meets with juveniles and parents at place of residence, school, and court;
  • Monitors progress at abiding by rules of probation and court orders and provides guidance and counseling while performing crisis intervention as necessary;
  • Prepares recommendations concerning juveniles reappearing in court;
  • Prepares and executes referrals to other agencies for services needed by families;
  • Determines whether a juvenile should be placed in detention and schedules appropriate court hearings;
  • Coordinates activities regarding juvenile arrests with law enforcement officials;
  • Serves petitions to juveniles while maintaining records;
  • Performs supervised drug screens on juveniles and adults as directed by court;
  • Sets court dates related to juvenile cases;
  • Attends court as scheduled;
  • Prepares, transcribes, completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, or other documents;
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate;
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data and verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections by utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs;
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, county officials, law enforcement personnel, judges, court officials, juveniles, parents, lawyers, therapists, victims, school officials, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed regarding juvenile probation activities or to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or to resolve problems;
  • Answers incoming telephone calls and provides information and assistance;
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of laws/regulations pertaining to juvenile detention, juvenile probation, or juvenile court activities;
  • Attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate; and
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK
  • Bachelor's Degree;
  • One (1) year of experience;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in the Juvenile Justice System.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance regarding individual differences in ability, personality, and interests, learning, and motivation.
  • Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skilled in using computers for data entry.
  • Skilled in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires adaptation to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
  • Ability to supervise, organize, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach and manipulate objects, tools and/or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines. The position requires hearing, mental acuity, speaking, and visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern office setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning.
