Job description

Position Objective:

To provide youth-centered substance use prevention services that promote health and wellness by enhancing protective factors to increase knowledge, skills, and attitudes for making healthy choices across the Community Action for Healthy Living service area.

Position Description:

Supervised by the Executive Director, the Youth Prevention Coordinator works in schools and communities to facilitate evidence informed alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention services.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Youth Development Specialist (YDS) to plan, organize, implement and deliver Youth Prevention programs, according to quantified measures as established by funding sources and with input from Youth Leaders.
  • Facilitate age appropriate alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention alternative activities as planned by Youth Leaders under the guidance of the YDS.
  • Provide comprehensive evidence-informed prevention education curriculum to the appropriate aged youth in schools.
  • Assist in community outreach, including but not limited to, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug awareness campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week, Great American SmokeOut, health fairs, business expos, parades and other community events to build awareness and provide prevention messaging.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the agency’s community resource list, curriculum, program materials, and physical inventory.
  • Assist with information sessions for parents, teachers, staff or administrators in the CAHL service area.
  • Network with other prevention and social service agencies within the region to include prevention, intervention, treatment, mental health, etc., to advance Youth Prevention efforts.
  • Collaborate with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, church groups, and other youth and community organizations to provide information and awareness on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Execute the Wisconsin Wins Program contract deliverables according to grant directives.
  • Document all program activities as required, and submit reports and records within deadlines.
  • Help ensure program sustainability by seeking in-kind, match, and other donations as appropriate.
  • Complete appropriate training to achieve required credentials and continuing education.
  • Create and maintain an appropriate and dynamic self-care plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications / Credentials / Training:

  • Degree from an approved college/university, plus some related work experience.
  • Health education experience in a community-based setting.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Complete Ethics in Prevention: A Guide for Substance Abuse Prevention Practitioners.
  • Earn Wisconsin Prevention Specialist Certification within 18 months.
  • Complete Wisconsin Substance Use Prevention Skills Training (SUPST) when offered.
  • Attend applicable conferences and trainings offered through Alliance for Wisconsin Youth, WI DHS Division of Care and Treatment Services, and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), including National Coalition Academy in year 6 of Drug Free Communities grant.

Travel Required:

  • Some travel within the CAHL service area for program activities.
  • Occasional travel to other parts of Wisconsin.
  • Some air travel to required national training.

Salary and Hours Worked:

  • Salary range is $44,000-$46,000 annually.
  • Position requires approximately 40 hours of effort per week, or a total of 2080 hours per year.
  • Normal work hours are 8 AM-4:30 PM, Monday-Friday, but some evenings and weekends will be required.

CAHL brings over 20 years of experience in Youth Prevention work. A recipient of Wisconsin State Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) funding since 2001, CAHL has been integral in local successes such as: local and state-wide smoke free air law enactment, reducing youth tobacco product access, and building youth advocates.

Presently, CAHL manages the TPCP contract for four Northeast Wisconsin counties and the Wisconsin Wins tobacco compliance check contract for ten counties. Wisconsin Wins is a state-wide program to decrease youth access to tobacco products and help retailers follow tobacco sales laws. Additionally, CAHL serves as the fiscal agent for REACH, Calumet County’s substance misuse prevention coalition. As a Drug Free Communities federal grant recipient, REACH works across Calumet County to reduce alcohol, nicotine and other substance misus to protect the health, safety and quality of life for all.
