Job description

Youth Development Instructor / Job Coach

Under the direction of the Youth Services Area Coordinator, the Youth Development Instructor (YDI)/Job Coach will be responsible for supporting participants in their educational attainments, introducing them to post-secondary or training options, encouraging their career development, monitoring job-site, and offering support when needed. This will be achieved by delivering lessons from the Opportunity Now contextualized curriculum, which allows participants to develop necessary life skills, explore their abilities and career options, and prepare for employment. Instructors provide participants with dynamic, interactive learning opportunities in a group, classroom, and individual setting. Instruction times normally occur during traditional school hours. In an effort to turn theory into application, the YDI/Job Coach is also responsible for providing on-site support to participants that will help them adjust to the workplace, learn, and perform job tasks specified by their employer to meet performance expectations. The goal is to acquire on-the-job experience for the participants to ensure long-term, gainful employment. This includes working hands-on with the participants at the job site to ensure they understand the assigned task(s). In addition to job-site training, this position includes work site development, counseling, advocacy, travel training, and other services needed to maintain employment.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a human services field, education, or career/employment counseling and a minimum of 1 year of work experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform job duties within the context of complex regulations and definitions, and to complete extensive technical documentation.
  • Ability to work both independently, with considerable self-direction, and as a contributing member of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to work with a variety of populations, including at-risk youth, adults, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to work with and be sensitive to a diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial population.
  • Willingness to comply with the established company performance standards, which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service orientation, embracing a team player orientation, and maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Must be flexible and adaptable.
  • Must be Microsoft Proficient (Word, Excel)
  • Must have reliable, independent transportation.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain safe and engaging learning environments, where students are provided with a balance of support and structure.
  • Based on the existing contextualized curriculum, prepare lesson plans by adapting those already created with engaging activities and exercises that inspire students to acquire knowledge and skills they can transfer to employment settings.
  • Monitor barriers to students’ active participation and engagement in the program, including those related to complex issues in their physical or social environment.
  • Monitor and report students’ attendance benchmarks and progress through a participant observation tool. Report any individual student issues to the Program Designee on a weekly basis.
  • Follow established policies and procedures for maintaining the integrity of the program with quality instruction, student discipline, classroom maintenance, safety, behavior management, and the security of all students and supplies at their disposal.
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention.
  • Provide students with professional one-on-one feedback regarding their performance in the program.
  • Attend all relevant meetings (supervision, staff meetings, case conference sessions, curriculum development, training, and workshops, etc.).
  • Maintain classroom documentation based on assignments from contextualized curriculum and enter data appropriately and accurately, as necessary. This includes but is not limited to goals and career assessments, resume’ worksheets, cover letters, and quality assurance surveys.
  • Accurately complete and submit monthly reports, attendance sheets, and all other required paperwork to the Program Designee by the last class day of each month.
  • Apply strength-based approaches with a trauma-informed lens to counsel students in academic, vocational, and employment issues. Mediate, problem-solve, and coordinate individual services for students to help them overcome employment barriers.
  • Coordinate student work experience and on-the-job training opportunities by networking with local businesses/employers to develop employment opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Instruct students in job seeking, application procedures, resume writing, interview preparation, job retention skills, and attitudes.
  • Monitor students on the job and provide coaching and feedback to address both satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance issues.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers; coordinate and monitor work-based training sites.
