Youth Advocate, Boys And Young Men Of Color

The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1968 to enrich the lives of youth, seniors, homeless populations, economically disadvantaged families, and under-served individuals in South Los Angeles by providing and facilitating a variety of essential educational services, social services, cultural activities, vocational opportunities and economic empowerment opportunities.

Brotherhood Crusade envisions a South Los Angeles devoid of health disparities, disenfranchisement, and poverty- associated adverse public health conditions. We believe that South Los Angeles can be a safe, thriving, culturally relevant, and inclusive community that provides all residents equitable access to human and social services and continually improves their quality of life. Our mission is to remove and/or help individuals overcome the barriers that deter their pursuit of success in life; effectuate academic and vocational success; provide opportunities for personal, social, and economic growth; promote access to artistic excellence and cultural awareness; increase financial literacy; facilitate opportunities for a better quality of life; and promote health and safety.

The Youth Advocate reports directly to either the Senior Vice President of Programs, Program Director or Manager and facilitates execution of leaderships instructions with respect to administration of the Boys and Young Men of Color program, monitoring and evaluation of the program (conducting: monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual audits, parent/caregiver surveys, and stakeholder surveys), administration of pre- and post-assessments, and collecting pertinent data.       

Responsibilities

• Intake: administer initial enrollment procedures, assist with the preparation of the individual youth development plan, receive applications, identify youth and family needs
• Assessments: administer pre-, mid, and post-assessments as well as quarterly surveys
• Advocacy: advocate for the youth and their family.  Ensure their receipt of culturally- and age-appropriate youth development services.
• Case notes: prepare and collect daily session summary sheets, weekly summary sheets, and monthly summary sheets.  Maintain and update the youth development plan.  Facilitate program schedules. Facilitate data collection and feedback in accordance with the monitoring and evaluation program.  
• Conduct classroom visits during youth's regular school day program.
• Conduct home visits on a regular basis, as appropriate.
• Retrieve incident reports, academic results, and surveys from the youth's school, parents, and social affiliations.
• Input observations, exercise results, notes, and other pertinent data into the tracking system.
• Report issues, incidents, or problems to the youth's parents/caregivers as well as to the administration, as appropriate.
• Interact with the youth's school, parents/caregivers, and role models.
• As needed, make referrals to and receive referrals from collaborative partners (mental health, physical activity, educational services, counseling and therapy, etc.).
• Prepare sign-in sheets for youth and collaborative partners.
• Monitor and record the work conducted by collaborative partners.
• Work closely with collaborative partners in implementing the program.
• Observe sessions between youth and collaborative partners.
• Ensure the safety of the youth at all times.
• Understand and comply with all of Brotherhood Crusade's childcare policies.      

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate shall possess a passion and commitment to the betterment of all individuals, especially low income and at-risk individuals.  The candidate must: have an acuity for implementing alternative/innovative programming; demonstrate patience with "hardest to serve, hardest to teach" individuals; demonstrate competence through education and experience; understand human nature and be able to provide reasonable counsel; possess leadership skills; have strong interpersonal skills; have strong organizational skills; and have a clean criminal record.  In addition, the candidate should have at least 1 year of experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

$50,000 - $55,000 a year

Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Due to our in-person and in office work with LAUSD, City of LA, County of LA and other work partners that require our team to be vaccinated we require that all potential candidates must be COVID-19 vaccinated with either, Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.

The successful candidate will be required to report to and work from the office complex at least five days a week. Offices are traditionally equipped with computers, telephones, desks, chairs, and office machines. Additionally, each office offers an instructional classroom from which orientations and trainings are conducted.

Benefits and salary will be negotiated based on experience, education, and the needs of the program.

This program is unique in that the successful candidate may be working with individuals who, heretofore, have never been exposed to the subject matter and, as such, may not readily adopt the precepts or methodologies. Moreover, these clients may exhibit stress-related emotions such as tension, frustration, and anger. The successful candidate must understand this phenomenon and possess a psychologically stable profile and a demeanor that minimizes the opportunity that these emotions will escalate to conflict.
