Description

Helpline Youth Counseling (HYC), a nonprofit agency has been providing youth services in Southeast Los Angeles County since 1971 with a primary purpose of providing therapeutic counseling and assistance to at-risk, low income children, youth and their families.

Mission

The mission of HYC is to serve youth and their families by promoting the development of strong individuals and families in their community. This is accomplished through education, therapeutic approaches, advocacy, and the utilization of community resources.

HYC has an immediate opening for a full-time Mental Health Advocate who will be responsible for providing assistance to children, youth, and parents/caregivers to access Mental health and family support services and combat the Mental health stigma that exists in the low-income Southeast Los Angeles County and Long Beach communities served by HYC.

  1. Provides multiple strategies for engagement and advocacy across agency departments and provide psychoeducation on Mental health issues that address stigma and coordinate linkage to Mental health services.
  2. Provides an active and progressive approach to outreach and engagement within the community while providing psychoeducation on Mental health including but not limited to depression, anxiety, substance use, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other Mental health issues to promote health and well-being.
  3. Provide engagement activities that will help clients served develop skills on self-regulating, building self-esteem, and self-sufficiency.
  4. Provide parent education workshops on child Mental health issues, safety planning and literature promoting Mental health.
  5. Provide linkage to supportive community resources including basic needs assistance supporting Mental health and well-being (food, shelter, rental payment assistance, hygiene and household supplies, baby items).
  6. Utilize HYC social media platforms to promote Mental health wellness, empower families to recognize mental illness, and obtain treatment.
  7. Provides culturally and linguistically appropriate communication and information to individuals, their families, and the community about cultural norms, accessing Mental health and social service systems.
  8. Maintain strong and ongoing relationships with collaborative partners and assist clients in accessing Mental health care at HYC and at other public and private Mental health agencies.
  9. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all job-related activities.
  10. Coordinate transportation and accompany member to critical appointments as needed.
  11. Will be required to participate in required trainings and clinical supervision.
  12. Must have excellent organizational skills and must complete all required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelors degree in the behavioral sciences field and/or lived experience.
  2. Experience in community-based services field.
  3. Permanent U.S. residency or citizenship.
  4. Ability to pass criminal clearance background check.
  5. Ability to successfully pass a TB screening test.

7. Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.

8. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and on weekends.

9. Current auto insurance, and a good driving record.

10. Valid California state drivers license.

11. Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and priorities.

12. Excellent administrative and verbal skills.

Requirement: Valid California driver's license, current auto insurance, a good driving record, and must be cleared to drive for business purposes by our insurance broker.

Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience in working within the Southeast Region of Los Angeles County and a familiarity with the population of the area.
  2. Experience in networking with school and community agencies in providing client care services programs.
  3. Experience in working in a community-based organization.
