PITCO Foods is a large independent foodservice distributor in Northern California. Based in San Jose, CA, PITCO also has distribution centers in Brisbane, Oakland, and Sacramento.
Overview:
The Yard Hostler is responsible for the staging of all trucks preparing them for dispatch, adhering to all commercial driving regulations and Company policies and procedures while driving any Company vehicle. Pitco Foods deliver freight between Service Centers and customers and support the selling process.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:
Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles (and triples, where applicable) and / or straight trucks.
- Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
- Hook / unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
- Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including but not limited to: forklift, pallet jack and hand truck
- Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including but not limited to: pallets, straps and rope
- Recoup / repair damaged freight when necessary
- Verify and complete required documentation and reports
- Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
- Collect cash or checks for freight charges, as required, and maintain required documentation
- Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch, including but not limited to: delays, arrivals and equipment problems, as required
- Demonstrate internal and external customer service
- Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs, solicit additional business and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
- Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
- Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Due to forklifts and other heavy equipment traveling through the store, the environment can be noisy and dusty, and may emit gas fumes.
- Doors at the front are frequently open, causing drafts and interior temperature changes.
- May have to handle merchandise and work with sharp tool edges.
- Standing and walking for long periods of time on concrete surface.
- Some overtime may be required.
- Tools, supplies and related merchandise may contain hazardous materials.
- Hours may vary due to operational need.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Bi-lingual a plus but not required
- Must pass Drug Test and Background Check
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
- Basic written and verbal communication skills (documentation, communication with peers, supervisors, etc.) Ability to work independently and/or as a team member Basic computer, math and legible handwriting
- Ability to hook-up and break-down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of about 100 pounds, several times per month
- Required bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling and moving items with need to lift and move bulky and heavy items without assistance up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
- Ability to follow instructions and complete required training

Education
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
Experience
- 2 years relevant work experience, and clean driving record
