Basic Function and Responsibility:

The University of Montana Foundation is seeking a skilled Writer and Content Producer to join its Marketing and Communications team.

The Writer and Content Producer is the Marketing and Communication Division’s lead strategic storyteller. They are responsible for collaborating with internal and external constituents to identify, develop, research, write and edit compelling stories and other communication materials that promote and elevate the UM Foundation’s goals, inspiring and engaging audiences across a variety of channels.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, the Writer and Content Producer partners with the Marketing and Communications team to develop distinctive and intentional messaging that serves the team’s content strategy as well as the organization’s fundraising, stewardship and brand-building goals. This individual is focused on developing accurate and persuasive content that is appropriate to the selected medium and target audience. The incumbent is responsible for creating the content that enables the Marketing and Communications team to implement a content management strategy.

In addition to primary responsibilities as a talented writer, the Writer and Content Producer actively contributes to the overall efficiency of the Marketing and Communications department by taking on key production coordination tasks. By seamlessly integrating the creative and logistical aspects of the role, this individual helps drive our marketing initiatives, ensuring a cohesive and compelling brand presence across various platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, write and edit materials in support of the UM Foundation’s fundraising and stewardship priorities, including website copy, news and impact stories, donor and student profiles, brochure and report content, marketing materials, social media posts, a variety of donor stewardship pieces, event materials, fundraising appeal content, video scripts, talking points and scripts, donor and staff bios, and Content for other print and digital materials
  • Identify and pursue stories that demonstrate the life-changing impact of philanthropy, featuring UM alumni, donors, students and other constituents
  • Incorporate editorial changes, comments and critiques from multiple reviewers using exceptional writing and editing skills; exercise sound judgment with regard to strategy, appropriate points of emphasis and persuasive impact
  • Work within the Marketing and Communications team (web, social, creative, strategy, media relations) to ensure that content is shared and repackaged for different media and across multiple storytelling channels. Recommend photography and videography to enhance content
  • Make timely updates to select sections of the UM Foundation website and other content management systems and platforms
  • Collaborate with external partners to arrange photoshoots
  • Assist with social media management

Desired Qualifications:

  • Highly developed written communications skills
  • Solid marketing writing experience
  • Strong understanding of social media (Facebook) strategy
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Proficient with MS Office
  • Proven experience writing for publication
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, English, or related field, and/or relevant experience preferred
