SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport. Establishes good relationships with students, parents and other staff members. This position will assist the head coach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Education - GED or higher
  2. Essential - High School Varsity or Collegiate - level experience as an athlete or coach.
  3. High School Head Coaching, college head coaching and/or college Assistant Coaching experience preferred.
  4. Criminal Background Check - A national, state and local criminal records and sex-offender registry check will be obtained and approved by Duneland before an offer will be made

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  1. Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport.
  2. Assesses student's skills and assigns team positions.
  3. Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
  4. Works with the athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition.
  5. Assigns duties to an Assistant Coach as necessary.
  6. Coaches and instructs students, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  7. Observes students, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  8. Determines game strategy based on the team's capabilities.
  9. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  10. Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard.
  11. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  12. Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students.
  13. Follows National Federation, IHSAA, Duneland Athletic Conference, Duneland School Corporation, Chesterton Middle School regulations governing the athletic program.
  14. Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards students, officials, and spectators.
  15. Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
  16. Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  17. Works with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season.
  18. Participates in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  19. Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment, inventory, and other related records.
  20. Do not leave the athletic premises until all athletes have gone home or been picked up by their parents. At no time are coaches to give rides to athletes UNLESS an emergency exists.
  21. Coaches are subject to being evaluated by the athletic director and or administration.
  22. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  1. Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with all publics
  2. Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work
  3. Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation
  4. Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  5. Ability to multi-task with attention to detail
  6. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes of the normal day and expectations
  7. Proficiency in the use of all technology for the sport and record keeping (i.e. computers, copiers, etc.)
  8. Proficiency in the use of and the ability to learn required instructional software, ( i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs)
  9. Demonstrate organizational and time management skills
  10. Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Duties are normally performed in a school environment or outdoors. Duties may be performed away from school. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
Equipment: A basic knowledge of operations for computers and software, printers, projectors, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.
Hours: There are regular after school, evening and weekend activities hours. In season, preseason and post season activities are required and expected.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
