Job Summary

The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery is a science, history, and culture museum for curious people of all ages. Now in our 12th year of operation, the museum features a main gallery with numerous hands-on exhibits, a collection of over 40,000 objects, a digital dome theater, and a local history research archive. We strive to serve all members of our community.

Do you have a background in museum exhibits, woodworking, fabrication, or facilities maintenance? The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery is seeking applicants for the position of Worker II, Cultural Services (Museum Maintenance Coordinator). The typical work schedule will be 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday with all work done on site except where called out below.
The Museum Maintenance Coordinator reports to the Senior Manager and works closely with other staff in the ongoing maintenance of museum exhibits and facilities. The primary focus of this position is on the daily care and upkeep of exhibit components, ensuring they are maintained to a high level and conducting repairs when required. The position will also perform routine building maintenance as required and coordinate with various City departments for work outside the scope of the position. Ideal candidates will possess experience with and a general working knowledge of accepted museum/gallery standards regarding exhibit maintenance and artifact handling; of use of tools and equipment for fabrication and construction in wood and other materials; of electronics and audio-visual technology; and the ability to research, identify, and procure parts and supplies using online computer and printed catalogs and other resources.
The person in this position must be a "self-starter" with an eye for detail, a strong customer service ethic, the ability to analyze situations and troubleshoot problems, and deliver appropriate solutions. Communicating effectively with fellow employees is critical to this position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Performs daily startup and shutdown of exhibits.
  • Provides ongoing exhibit maintenance, repair, and improvement needs. Develops and adheres to a schedule for preventative maintenance.
  • Coordinates with City departments on identified building maintenance projects determined to be outside the scope of the position.
  • Conducts regular gallery walkthroughs and inspections to verify exhibits and facilities are operating correctly.
  • Conducts cleaning of the exhibits and gallery on an ongoing basis.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Manager, constructs and installs exhibit displays and other elements. Assists in the setup and tear-down of temporary/traveling exhibits.
  • Maintains the exhibits workshop as a clean, organized, and safe environment.
  • Observes safety and risk management procedures in public areas and work spaces and ensures visitor safety and experience goals are maintained.
  • Maintains inventory of fabrication materials, tools/equipment, and exhibit consumables, and order supplies as needed. Researches and maintains a list of vendors and materials used.
  • As required, assists with exhibit-related work at off-site locations, including but not limited to storage facilities, municipal historic sites, and materials procurement at local stores.
  • As required, assists with museum visitor services and non-exhibit operational needs.
  • Attends staff and meetings and reports out on exhibit and maintenance related projects.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in the use of basic carpentry techniques, hand tools, power tools, basic electrical wiring and lighting, paints and adhesives, and associated safety practices. Prior experience in museum/gallery or tradeshow exhibit fabrication a plus.
  • Basic understanding of audio-video equipment and electronics, with the ability to learn new skills regarding the operation and maintenance of A/V systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, able to analyze situations, responding quickly to deliver effective solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and colleagues from different departments within the City.
  • Ability to comfortably and effectively interact with the general public and visitors of all ages.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM
PREFERRED

High School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates
Some college-level coursework or undergraduate degree preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ work experience in a relevant design field (e.g., graphics, interiors, architecture, industrial design), museums, fine arts, or in a related trade/skill. Prior experience working in a museum or gallery environment a plus. Will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications.
