PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Salary to be commensurate with experience.
The hiring range for this position is: $21.51 - $26.89/Hourly
Sign On Bonus: New employees are eligible for a $1,000 bonus; with $500 paid on the first payroll, and $500 paid upon successful completion of the 6 month introductory period.

The City of Aurora Water Utility Worker performs manual labor duties and will assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of the multiple divisions within the Aurora Water Department. Employees in this position will demonstrate their work by modeling the Core 4 Values of: Customer Service, Professionalism, Integrity, and Respect.
The City of Aurora is pleased to offer:

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Transmission and Distribution
This section does repair and maintenance on waterline street valves, pressure control valves, air relief valves, fire hydrants, and the potable, raw water and reuse delivery systems. Works in the street for maintaining valves, in confined space (vaults) for control valves and air relief valves and off to the side of the roads for maintaining fire hydrants and raw water. All work is manual labor intensive, but overtime is minimal except for snow removal and occasional emergency operations. Average overtime worked in this section is 30 hours per year.
Pumping
The Water Utility Worker in the Pumping section reports to a central location each morning and then drives to and performs work at remote sites within and outside of the City. The position normally works with at least one other person but requires the independent initiative to complete assigned tasks. This position works in the distribution and collection systems working with raw, potable, reuse and stormwater as well as raw sewage on a daily basis. Work assignments include pump/motor oil changes, inspections, repair, remove foreign objects and rebuild. Operated valves, clean and remove objects from check valves and rebuild. Clean and wash wet wells. Wash and chlorinate storage tanks. Climb water storage tanks to heights of 40 feet using proper safety equipment. Mandatory participation in the Emergency Standby Rotation (average every 6 weeks) and participate in the City's snow removal program. Maintain CDL certification after training.

In addition, all divisions will perform the following primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Loads and unloads tools
  • Average overtime worked in this section is 35 hours per year
  • Repair and replacement activities
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance
  • Assist work crews in the installation, repair, testing and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels and structures, large water meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other equipment
  • Perform tasks using tools such as hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools
  • May assist with on-call shifts as needed assist Public Works department with snow removal activities
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical principles.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
Experience:
  • 1-year work experience related to manual labor preferred
Abilities:
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions
  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively
  • Ability to work overtime, call back duty, and standby with forty five-minute response times
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong
Skills:
  • Skill in the use of ground maintenance equipment and the use of hand tools preferred
  • This job requires attention to detail and being thorough in completing work tasks
Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • State Issued Driver's license with a good driving history required
  • Current Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire date.
Physical Demands:
  • Heavy physical work
  • Requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing over 100 pounds, with assistance
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles
  • Vision for reading gauges and written instruction
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
Work Environment:
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes
  • Some work may be performed in trenches, confined spaces, and in high traffic areas.
Equipment Used:
  • Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
