Job description

Duties

As a Wood Crafter you will perform the following duties:

  • Execute plans and operations as delegated by the carpenter-cabinet maker leader in the shop, including the meeting of quality standards, production quotas and time deadlines.
  • Follow oral and written instructions i.e. guides, work orders, blueprints, sketches, specifications and accepted trade practices. Perform cabinet work such as making door frames, window frames, paneling of all types, baseboards, cornice trims and moldings. Construct and/or repair cabinets, bookcases, conference tables, stands, and display cases.
  • Perform cabinet making using use various powered machines, including wood working machines, portable electric tools, and hand tools.
  • Construct, alter or repair structures or items including duplicating and repairing wood surfaces by matching types of woods, grains, and surfaces.

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Receive authorization from OPM on any job offer you receive, if you are or were (within the last 5 years) a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non-Career SES employee in the Executive Branch.
  • Serve a one year probationary period, if required.
  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 5 investigation level). You must be granted this clearance before you can start the job.
  • Have your identity and work status eligibility verified if you are not a GSA employee. We will use the Department of Homeland Security’s e-Verify system for this. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.
  • Submit to periodic and random drug testing where a urinalysis will be used to screen for illegal drug use. A negative test result is required before you start.
  • Perform work inside and outside and you will be exposed to extreme cold/hot, damp conditions. You will be subject to noise, minor burns, electric shocks, cuts and bruises, and is subject to injuries due to falls from ladders while performing "high" cleaning duties.
  • Lift, carry, and/or move objects, which requires moderately heavy physical efforts. You will be required to carry, set up, and work on ladders and/or scaffolding. You will also be subject to noise, minor burns, electric shocks, cuts and bruises, and other injuries.
  • Subject to injury in the powered shop machinery when positioning wood or ply board being fed through machines. Work is performed from bending and stooping positions as well as from a standing position at the work bench.
  • You may be required to undergo a medical examination before you start work because of these conditions.

The WG-10 salary range starts at $33.61 per hour
If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.


EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Do you have the ability to perform the following without more than normal supervision: performing cabinet work such as making door frames, window frames, paneling of all types, baseboards, cornice trims and mouldings and/or constructing and/or repairing cabinets, book cases, conference tables, stands, and display cases.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Knowledge Of Equipment Assembly, Installation And Repair.
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting reading).
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Materials
