Job description

Position: Athletic CoachReports To: Head Coach / Building Athletic DirectorSalary Schedule / Grade: Stipend According to the DEA Master AgreementF.L.S.A Status: Non-exempt SUMMARY Under the direction of the building athletic director/principal, head coach and assistant coach instructs and works with athletes to prepare them for competition. Coaches help athletes to play their best individually and as a team in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, tennis, cross country, swimming, track and golf. Coaches are experts on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sports.

Coach must also know about sports equipment, physical fitness, safety as well as the related eligibility and compliance guidelines for DPS and the Ohio High School Athletics Association. Due to the increased duties and requirements from the district and the OHSAA standards, coaches will not be considered for athletic director positions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(Incumbent performs a majority of the following duties)Organization and CommunicationCommunicate information regarding expectation, practices, competitions and other events with parents, players and administration in a timely mannerConduct orientation programs for parents, athletes and assistant coachesDevelop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the teamAdministrativeImplement and follow Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), district, state and school athletic codes, rules and philosophiesMonitor athlete class attendance, behavior and academic progressEnsure quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the mediaTraining and Preparation of AthletesTeach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tacticsPractice with clear objectives and goals including practice plansCondition athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agilitySupervise and conduct practices and contests safely; supervise locker rooms and vehiclesTeach sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one's teamRespond to player injuries with approved first aid techniquesModel appropriate behavior and sportsmanship in and out of the athletic arenaProvide coverage for absent coachesProvide positive motivation All DPS district assistant coaches are expected to abide by the coaches' Code of Ethics as outlined in DPS board policy.

As a professional educator and leader, the head coach will:Be modest in victory and gracious in defeatRespect the integrity and judgment of the game officialsProvide a safe environment for practice and competitionCommunicate and interpret program goals and objectives to parents and communityStrive to develop the qualities of leadership, initiative and good judgment in each team memberCreate a set of training rules for athletes which reflects the positive values of abstaining from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobaccoEncourage and assist team members to set personal goals to achieve their highest academic potentialRecognize the individual worth and reinforce the self-image of each team memberExemplify the highest moral character a role model for young people CORE BEHAVIORS & COMPETENCIES Job-specificCoping with Stress = think critically and solve problems in difficult situations; capable of handling interruptions effectivelyInterpersonal Skills = successfully interact and engage with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and others; enjoy working with childrenAdaptability and Flexibility = willingness to change methods and approaches as appropriate QUALIFICATIONS RequirementsMust be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S. VerificationsMust pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06Ohio Teaching license preferred Knowledge & ExperienceThree or more years previous coaching experience at high school or college or higher level in the sport being coached.Knowledge of overall operation of an athletic programMust pass a district background checkPossess valid CPR/First-Aid, Pupil Activity Permit, Fundamental of Coaching, Concussion in Sports Course certificates and Cardiac Arrest Course Certificate.All things being equal, hiring priority is given to DEA credentialed teachersAbility to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDSThe physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
