The roles and responsibilities of a Wireless Construction Field Technician involve executing and completing Wireless Construction projects according to industry standards and specifications. Here are the key responsibilities and duties:

  • Installation and Maintenance: Perform installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of wireless communication systems, equipment, and infrastructure. This includes antennas, cables, connectors, amplifiers, and other components. Ensure proper alignment, grounding, and weatherproofing of equipment.
  • Equipment Testing and Commissioning: Conduct testing and commissioning of wireless communication equipment to ensure proper functionality and performance. Use specialized tools and instruments to measure signal strength, noise levels, and other parameters. Identify and resolve any issues or abnormalities.
  • Cable Routing and Management: Route and manage cables for wireless communication systems, ensuring proper placement, support, and protection. Follow industry best practices and safety guidelines for cable management. Label cables and maintain accurate documentation for future reference.
  • Site Survey and Evaluation: Assist in conducting site surveys to assess feasibility and suitability for Wireless Construction projects. Evaluate terrain, structural integrity, power availability, and other factors. Provide input and recommendations based on site conditions.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment. Follow industry standards and best practices for Wireless Construction. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Identify and report safety hazards or concerns.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work collaboratively with project teams, including project managers, engineers, and other trade professionals. Communicate effectively to ensure smooth workflow and coordination. Provide updates on project progress and report any issues or challenges.
  • Quality Assurance and Control: Ensure work is performed to meet quality standards and specifications. Follow installation guidelines provided by manufacturers and project specifications. Conduct inspections and tests to verify compliance and identify any deficiencies.
  • Problem Solving and Troubleshooting: Analyze and troubleshoot issues with wireless communication systems. Diagnose problems, identify root causes, and implement appropriate solutions. Make necessary adjustments or repairs to restore proper functionality.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and complete documentation of work performed, including installation records, test results, and as-built drawings. Complete detailed reports and submit them to project managers or supervisors. Maintain organized records for future reference.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices related to Wireless Construction. Participate in training programs and certifications to enhance skills and knowledge. Seek opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
  • Adherence to Regulations: Ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and safety standards, such as OSHA guidelines. Obtain necessary permits and approvals for construction activities. Follow environmental regulations and guidelines for proper waste disposal.
  • Teamwork and Leadership: Collaborate with other team members, including apprentices and technicians, to accomplish project goals. Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members. Foster a positive and productive work environment.
  • Note: The specific roles and responsibilities of a Wireless Construction journeyman may vary depending on the company, project requirements, and industry standards. It is crucial for journeyman to possess technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a strong commitment to safety and quality. They should also have a good understanding of wireless communication systems and equipment.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
  • Additional education in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field from a technical school or community college is beneficial.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in wireless telecommunications equipment installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of wireless network architectures, including LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, and microwave systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and construction plans.
  • Familiarity with power tools and equipment used in construction and installation tasks.
  • Understanding of RF (Radio Frequency) principles and propagation characteristics.
  • Basic understanding of fiber optic cables, connectors, and splicing techniques.

Certifications:

  • Certification in telecommunications or wireless technology from organizations such as the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) or equivalent is desirable.
  • Specific manufacturer certifications for equipment installation and maintenance may be required by employers.
  • Safety certifications such as OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Training are often mandatory.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in telecommunications construction, installation, or maintenance roles is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with wireless equipment installation, antenna mounting, cabling, and equipment grounding.
  • Familiarity with testing equipment such as spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal generators.
  • Experience working at heights and in outdoor environments, including rooftop installations and tower climbing.
  • Knowledge of construction practices and safety protocols related to telecommunications infrastructure.

Physical Fitness:

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and materials, climb ladders, and work at heights.
  • Physical agility and stamina to perform outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Comfort working in confined spaces and at elevated heights, including tower climbing.

Communication Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, supervisors, and clients.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and convey technical information clearly.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with other technicians and contractors on construction projects.

Problem-Solving Abilities:

  • Analytical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues and resolve problems efficiently.
  • Aptitude for diagnosing and rectifying network issues, including RF interference and signal degradation.
  • Resourcefulness in finding solutions to challenges encountered during construction projects.

Safety Awareness:

  • Commitment to following safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the telecommunications industry, including tower safety and fall protection.

Driver's License:

  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are often required, as the role may involve traveling to different work sites.

Adaptability and Flexibility:

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and work environments.
