Field work may include extended periods in remote locations. Duties include surveys or transport via small fixed and rotary wing aircraft, small watercraft, ORVs and snowmobiles, and hiking, all of which may be in extreme conditions (e.g., biting insects, adverse weather). Use of immobilizing chemicals or other methods to allow safe handling of wildlife species, firearms, and bear deterrents may be necessary. The incumbent will also be tasked with special projects, such as developing feasibility assessments for intensive management or other work, publishing technical and nontechnical reports, and presentations to multiple audiences including the Alaska Board of Game and various scientific or public audiences.

Skills should include a solid foundation in the wildlife sciences including an array of field data collection methods, statistical techniques, and software platforms. Also desirable is strong familiarity with the ecology, research, and management of Alaskan wildlife, particularly ungulates.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply conventional and advanced sampling, data collection, and analytical techniques to wildlife research questions, including adapting and/or developing new tools and methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with other researchers, managers, and biometricians, both verbally and in writing, to identify, prioritize, design, and execute research projects of varying scale and scope.
