Engine Specialized Experience: For the GS-06: 1 year (12 months) serving as a senior Wildland Firefighter on a wildland fire module or crew with on-the-line wildland fire experience in fire control, prevention or suppression work, and 2) utilizing and maintaining a variety of specialized wildland fire tools and equipment. Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Engine Specialized Experience: For the GS-07: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-06 Wildland Firefighter, driving and operating a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation; starting the pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles; responsible for keeping engine in a full state of readiness. Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Veterans IHC & IHC Specialized Experience: For the GS-06: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-05 Wildland Firefighter on a handcrew, wildland or prescribed fire module, as chainsaw operator (including maintenance and minor repairs), preparing and hooking longlines and external loads. Performs preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Veterans IHC & IHC Specialized Experience: For the GS-07: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-06 Wildland Firefighter to locate and lead fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling, holding/patrol/mop-up operations. Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Fuels Specialized Experience: For GS-06: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-5 Wildland Firefighter on a handcrew or prescribed fire crew. Performs the duties of a fully qualified chain saw operator and chainsaw repair technician. Certified in the use of helicopter long lines. Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Fuels Specialized Experience: For GS-07: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-6 Wildland Firefighter on a prescribed fire crew. Makes initial evaluation of fire situations, determines rate of spread, potential hazards to property and other improvements. Performs prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. May use specialized firing equipment (e.g. drip torches, flares, and terra torch). Education cannot be used to qualify for this grade level.
Helitack Specialized Experience For the GS-06: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-5 Wildland Firefighter loading a helicopter with personnel and cargo, securing cargo as instructed. Completing manifests of personnel and equipment. Inspecting helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment. Assuring that needed tools and equipment are available. Serving as a rappeller or short hauler. Education may not be used to qualify for this position.
Helitack Specialized Experience For the GS-07: 1 year (12 months) serving as a GS-6 Wildland Firefighter leading the loading of helicopter personnel and cargo considering weight and balance, securing cargo, etc. Completing manifests of personnel and equipment. Hooking longline external loads and maintaining and operating other accessory equipment. Inspecting helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment. Assuring that needed tools and equipment are available. Serving as a rappeller or short hauler. Education may not be used to qualify for this position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c)(CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37 unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement. If over the MEA and you are not a veteran, proof of prior covered service must be submitted prior to employment. Acceptable proof consists of SF-50s showing beginning and ending dates of covered/creditable appointments and copies of approved letters based on individual claims.
Physical Demands: Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment: The work is primarily performed out-of-doors in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to adverse weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. The employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by fixed- wing or rotor-wing aircraft.Education: Education may not be used to qualify for this position.
