The duties of this position are performed at Grant County Airport, 589 Industrial Park RD, in John Day, May thru October. During the months of November - April, the duties of this position may be performed remotely.

What we are looking for:
ODF is looking for a Wildland Fire Supervisor - Aviation Supervisor Helitack to supervise coordination of the necessary field activities to meet aviation program objectives on a statewide level through cooperation with cooperators and federal agencies.
These goals and related duties are in the areas of:
  • Supervising 11 employees engaged in field activities.
  • Accomplishing aircraft management, suppression, and ensures maintenance of equipment and facilities to support accomplishment of program objectives.
  • Provides supervisory and administrative guidance to subordinate employees necessary to meet objectives.

Minimum Qualifications
Five years of Wildland Fire suppression or emergency dispatching which includes one year of leading/supervising the work of others;
OR
Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and two years of Wildland Fire suppression or emergency dispatching which includes one year of leading/supervising the work of others.
Note: Will be required to successfully take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the moderate level.
Note: Driver's License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver's license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to make decisions based upon procedural and critical resource needs that affect the timely mobilization of emergency resources.
  • Ability to make decisions related to the planning, supervision, coordination, and general administration of seasonal helitack workforce.
  • Ability to make decisions involving personnel management including discipline, scheduling, hiring fire suppression, purchasing, building and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding fire suppression, including determining firefighting resources.
  • Experience leading/supervising the work of others.
  • Ability to coordinate and plan projects.
  • Ability to communicate with people outside the organization, representing ODF. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone, radio or e-mail.
