This position provides direct supervision of WIC Educators and other staff as necessary. The Registered Dietitian is responsible for nutrition counseling with high-risk participants, day-to-day oversight of personnel and client operations including caseload management, chart audits and observation, and/or participation in program planning and developmentEssential Duties/Responsibilities
- Supervises, coordinates, guides and advises WIC Educators and Program Assistants, ensuring work is performed in a timely and accurate manner and is in compliance with Federal, State and local policies and procedures.
- Directs and oversees the daily duties and workload of WIC Educators and Program Assistants and ensures equitable distribution of work and makes adjustments to priorities and workload of individual employees. Implements program Quality Assurance activities such as Educator caseload management, chart audits and observations.
- Conducts performance appraisals and disciplinary actions and motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Assists with reviewing employment applications, selecting and interviewing applicants and recommending applicants for hire. Provides training and orientation to new employees.
- Interviews participants and makes thorough nutrition assessments by interpreting anthropometrics, health histories and other factors.
- Develops, implements, evaluates and follows up on nutritional care plans. Counsels participants and families on nutritional needs with consideration of income, cultural and religious food patterns, home facilities, education level and other psycho-social factors.
- Consults with health care providers on participant nutritional needs, makes appropriate referrals and follows up as necessary.
- Counsels all high risk participants within the required time frame. Determines follow up care for as long as the participant is considered high risk.
- Reviews, evaluates, and/or develops nutrition education materials; works on assigned nutrition projects.
- Participates in program planning development and evaluation; makes recommendations concerning program activities and policy to WIC Program Manager and assists with policy implementation.
- Participates in departmental emergency planning and response activities.
- Promotes public health within the community.
- Takes personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive Public Health image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
- Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of WIC public health rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of pre-natal, breastfeeding, infant, and childhood nutrition and development.
- Knowledge and understanding of company policies and procedures.
- Skill in demonstrating a cooperative, professional attitude to cultivate relationships both within and outside the organization.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing multiple tasks and the ability to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Skilled in training and presentation.
- Skill in using a computer and various software packages including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to use scientific and measurement devices: Hemocue, infant and adult scales, stadiometer and length board.
- Ability to communicate, motivate and organize projects among a broad spectrum of personnel, frequently under deadline pressure.
- Ability to respond in a flexible manner and reprioritize work as situations change.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionablefindings or concerns. Ability to identify problems and work creatively to develop solutionsand recommend corrective actions to supervisor, considering the impact of actions on the department.
- Ability to write and maintain accurate records and reports to meet management objectives. Ability to write clearly and concisely and with respect to grammar, punctuation and spelling.
- Ability to maintain the security of sensitive and confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to perform under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Human Nutrition, Dietetics or closely related field.
- Minimum two years of supervisory or leadership experience.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Licenses/Certificates:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must be a Registered Dietitian in good standing with Commission of Dietetics.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.
Work environment may be loud with potential exposure to infections, blood and contagious diseases. Some travel may be required; work may be assigned in various locations. Public Health employees are responsible for providing proof of vaccinations and/or tuberculosis testing as applicable to the specific position and must provide proof of completion of required vaccinations/testing or proof of initiation within sixty days of hire date.
