Job description

The Weekend Director/Production Technician has three primary tasks:
Newscast Directing, Floor Director, and Camera Robotics Operations.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the efforts of all technical operators during newscasts and other live and recorded productions while directing
  • Observes pictures through monitors and directs camera/video staff concerning composition
  • Works with the news producers to deliver a clean and high energy newscast
  • Helps train other studio operators on the proper operation during live broadcasts
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Operates studio cameras and field cameras for live and recorded events
  • Composes and frames shots, applying the technical aspects of light, lenses and camera settings to achieve the effects sought by directors, station management, and other personnel
  • Adjusts positions and controls of cameras to change focus, exposure and lighting as requested by the directors, station management, and other personnel
  • Able to floor direct and take commands from director
  • Works with on-air talent to provide precise direction
  • Operates computer editing systems
  • Collaborate with the director and studio staff to coordinate the action in the studio
  • Facilitates pre-production and production requirements for Weekend live newscasts.
  • Pre-production: tech rundowns, Grass Valley ignite automation coding
  • Live-shot production
  • Direct Weekend studio newscasts and remote productions as assigned
  • Reconcile technical and operational issues related to daily News production processes.
  • Code newscasts in Grass Valley ignite automation.
  • Provide desktop editing (Adobe Premiere) support when necessary.
  • Communicate technical and content elements to studio and remote production teams
  • Collaborate with producers to facilitate production elements, lighting design, camera-blocking, props, set furnishings, and related presentation elements.
  • Provide other production support (live and pre-recorded) for News Specials, Creative Services, Sports, Special Events, Digital and Client production
  • Other duties as assigned

The position is primarily a Robotics Studio Camera Operator and Floor Director with weekend duties as a Newscast Director. As a Newscast Director this position will typically direct a minimum of two shows per week.
STUDIO CAMERA OPERATOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES:
Composes and frames camera shots, applying the technical aspects of lenses and camera settings to achieve the effects sought by Newscast Directors. Adjusts positions and controls of cameras to change focus, exposure and lighting as requested by the Newscast Director. Operates studio cameras during live broadcasts. Operates remote cameras during live broadcasts. Confers with Newscast Directors and other crew and staff members to discuss show rundowns, desired effects, camera movements and lighting requirements. Sets up cameras and related equipment.
NEWSCAST DIRECTOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinates the efforts of all technical operators during newscasts and other live and recorded productions. Observes pictures through monitors and directs camera/video staff concerning compositions. Works with the News Staff including: News Producers, Anchors and Reporters, News Photographers and News Video Editors to deliver a clean and high-quality newscast. Switches video sources and given direction at the same time during live broadcasts.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The Weekend Director/Production Technician must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, work near others, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, this person must be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions and can carry up to 50 pounds.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, Television Production or equivalent related experience
  • Must be a team player
  • Adept at positively communicating, motivating, engaging and leading a production team
  • Precise time management and ability to work efficiently under hard deadlines
  • Demonstrates composure and timely decision-making in a dynamic, fluid and vigorous environment associated with live News production
  • Current, comprehensive and broad knowledge of fundamental News production technologies
  • Intellect and ability to learn, adapt and train others on new production technologies
  • Demonstrate creative and innovative thinking in all aspects of production responsibilities
  • Possess working knowledge of production operating systems including ENPS, Bit Central, Adobe Premiere, Grass Valley ignite and equivalent production and operating systems. Proficient in Microsoft Office/Outlook/Teams
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
