At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Wearables Research Scientist to join our team, whose mission is to takes a first principles physics based approach to material and manufacturing research that deliver new wearable device architectures that drive the density of electronics and improve wearability over traditional wearables (smart watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.). This requires the candidate to innovate on the electro/mechanical architecture, tools, materials and processes to accelerate and de-risk the development of future wearable devices. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in on-body consumer wearable electronics (smart watch, medical devices, athletic wearables, etc.) with aptitude in innovating the integration architecture, materials, and integration processes to improve electronics integration/density, wearability, reliability, and scalability to volume. You will collaborate with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of exceptional researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities. We seek people who work well on teams, can brainstorm and communicate big ideas, and can plan and drive development activities.
- Enable wearable device electro-mechanical architecture innovation using a first principle physics-based approach (i.e. how to bring components together in a way that is more flexible, reliable, performant, and scalable)
- Drive the integration research portfolio which enable scalable device (bare semiconductor/component to system level) integration and assembly that exhibit high reliability for wearable applications
- Partner and collaborate with researchers, hardware engineers, device and systems integration teams, and external partners to push development beyond state-of-the-art
- Motivate and leverage innovations in materials and manufacturing in partner teams to enable new wearable architectures
- Design, execute, and oversee internal, external, and hybrid manufacturing workflows to demonstrate and mature next generation wearable devices
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in the design, modeling, and manufacture of consumer, medical, wearable, or ruggedized electronics fields
- 10+ years of experience in inventing and maturing technology from research/ideation to mass manufacturing
- Experience across a variety of electro-mechanical devices and the manufacturing processes and materials required to enable/innovate new wearable device architectures (smart watch vs. medical devices)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Track record of delivering new wearable electronic device architectures to the market
- Background in connecting finite element analysis with hands on manufacturing and materials
- Experience in failure analysis, and connecting failure analysis to manufacturing processes, materials, and device architecture innovation
- Experience working across broad cross-functional teams to deliver on challenging problems
