JOB DESCRIPTION

Classification Responsibilities: The Operator is responsible for assisting the foreman in the Operation and Maintenance of the Authority’s facilities which includes all activities related to the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of the facilities. Duties include but are not limited to laboratory testing, planning, organizing, and coordinating. The Operator is responsible for providing the Foreman and Management with all pertinent information related to emergency water or wastewater problems, issues, and outages. The employee in this class must be on call on a 24-hour basis to cover emergencies and available to work weekend and holiday rotations. This position is given considerable latitude for independent judgment and decision-making to ensure compliance with federal and state drinking water standards. The employee must be able to fill in and perform all duties of the foreman in his/her absence. The employee is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment that complies with federal and state guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to three or more years in the planning, operation, and maintenance of a water or wastewater facilities.

Special Requirements: Must possess Class A, E or B, E operator’s license with subclasses: 6 (membrane filtration), 7 (corrosion control and sequestering),8 (Chemical addition),9 (Ion exchange and green sand),10 (Aeration and Activated Carbon Adsorption),11 (Gaseous Chlorination Disinfection) endorsement for drinking water from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and be insurable. OR

Special Requirements: Must possess a Wastewater Class E operator’s license and subclass 4 (Satellite collection system with a pump station) and class E drinking water system certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and be insurable. OR

Special Requirements: Must possess Class A, E, or B, E operator’s license with subclasses: 1 (activated sludge), and 4 (Satellite Collection System with a pump station) for wastewater from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and be insurable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Communication: Communicates with contractors, developers, and the public in order to disseminate information regarding the water treatment plant and resolve related problems, and provide project status and updates to the Foreman. Communicate with the Foreman and Management to prevent, resolve, or minimize the impact of utility problems.

• Must maintain an active mobile phone; and a remote access capable device.

Manual/Physical: Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Pennsylvania Driver’s License to attend meetings or to perform inspections of treatment facilities, work crews, and equipment. Observes, inspects, and monitors crew and work being performed to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards and industry standards for operations and maintenance.

• Corrected vision to make visual observations of computer screens, pump stations, grounds, and equipment.
• Repetitive bending, twisting, standing, sitting, reaching, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.
• Ability to receive detailed information through oral and written communication and to make fine distinctions in sound, such as when making adjustments to equipment.
• Significant physical labor with lifting up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to convey detailed instructions accurately, loudly, and quickly to other workers when working near machinery.
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, and ramps require the use of feet, legs, hands, and arms up to three (3) stories in height (30').
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Mental: Comprehends and makes inferences from written material to analyze data, produce documents, and make operational decisions. Prioritizes and receives instructions from the foreman. Develop and update of water treatment plant maintenance management system including but not limited to; meters, pumps, computer systems, chemical feed systems, and tanks. Analyzes utility problems and determines corrective actions. Learns job-related material through hands-on training and in a classroom setting. Analyzes data to make recommendations to foreman and management regarding projects for repair and replacement, staffing, and budget. Participates in the long-range planning and design of water infrastructure replacement and maintenance projects. Coordinates and performs work activities and program functions with other Authority departments. Performs mathematical calculations.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: engineering-related principles and practices applicable to water. Water Treatment systems; Principles, materials, methods, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of water lines; Safety methods and procedures used in water distribution system work; Pumping stations, metering, and sampling stations.

Ability to: be tactful with the general public and utility customers; Learn the rules and regulations of Slippery Rock Municipal authority; Compliance with water distribution standards and specifications; Interpret project plans, blueprints, and diagrams to determine equipment, materials, and supplies needed to complete project. Understand and establish procedures for installing, maintaining, and repairing water treatment facilities.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $27.50 per hour
