Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

The Greater Hazleton Joint Sewer Authority (GHJSA) is seeking candidates for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator position.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of Wastewater Treatment, sludge processing, incineration and laboratory process control in a Wastewater Treatment facility; maintain operating conditions by interpreting meters, gauges, biological and chemical analysis and observation of the treatment process; maintain equipment and facilities in a safe, effective and orderly condition to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Wastewater Treatment facility.

Applicants should have an understanding of chemistry, biology, math, and mechanical/electronic concepts as they relate to Wastewater Treatment. Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or a closely related field is preferred. Applicants must either possess a “Class A, Subclass 1” Pennsylvania Water and Wastewater Operators’ License or obtain the license with in two (2) years from the date of hire by passing the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Wastewater “Class A, Subclass 1” Examination in order to continue employment with the GHJSA. The hourly rate for a Non-Certified Operator is currently $25.08 and the hourly rate for a Certified Operator is currently $31.35. A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record is also required for this position. Pre-employment drug screening and background checks, including driving record, will be conducted.

This is a swing shift position, which requires the employee to work first, second, and third shift on a rotating basis.
