Job Description Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs and takes the lead on basic maintenance work in the watershed area, and executes related duties as required.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Takes lead in direction on the watershed crew in tasks such as fence and road repair, cutting and hauling timber, clearing spillways and dams of timber and debris, and related tasks.
  • Performs basic maintenance work in the watershed area, including some forestry work.
  • Uses picks, shovels, chain saws and other types of hand tools.
  • May be required to hike several miles carrying all tools to reach necessary locations.
  • Patrols the watershed and looks for trespassers.
  • Reads stream gages to ascertain the creek flow.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

  • Ability to live on-site Monday through Friday.
  • Primarily strenuous physical work requiring the ability to frequently stand, walk and kneel for extended periods of time while using manual and long handle tools in a high-altitude, outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry timber and building materials.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Have and maintain acceptable motor vehicle record and criminal history.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Working towards or completed high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience as Watershed Crew Member.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands: Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Upper body strength to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis. Requires sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to give verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person. Must have sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to inspect the work of employees supervised and review, evaluate and prepare written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate all required safety equipment.
Work Environment: Works in a high-altitude, outdoor environment with an exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
Machines and equipment used include but are not limited to the following: Single and tandem-axle dump trucks, backhoe, loader, roller, grader, forklift, sweeper, weed-mower, jackhammer, pickup truck, hand and power tools, including welding equipment and two-way radio; and standard office equipment including computers, phones, calculators and copy machines.
Living Accommodations: Employee must live on-site.
  • Employee must live in employer-provided accommodations at Silver Lake Watershed Monday through Friday, or as otherwise negotiated. Silver Lake Watershed is 13 miles from Nederland, CO, which is the nearest town.
  • Employee sleeps in shared co-ed bunkhouse and has access to shared co-ed bathhouse.
  • Employee works an 8 hour shift each day.
  • Employee carpools between Boulder and Silver Lake in a city vehicle at the start and end of the work week.
During non-working hours, employee must comply with city rules, regulations, and policies while on-site.
