Job Duties

Do you enjoy working hands-on? Are you knowledgeable of hydrologic laws, regulations, and procedures? Then look no further! The Virginia Department of Energy, Mined Land Repurposing program, is seeking a Water Quality Specialist to ensure mineral resource extraction is conducted in an environmentally sound manner while maintaining compliance with Virginia mineral extraction and reclamation guidelines. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing and evaluating permit applications, preparing and writing NPDES permits, providing technical assistance, and assisting with special projects.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience in order to qualify for this position:
  • Considerable knowledge of hydrologic principles and practices, computer operations, and computer mapping
  • Demonstrated ability to apply hydrologic principles, conduct technical investigations, and determine if environmental or hydrologic problems are mineral extraction related
  • Knowledge of mineral resource extraction practices
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing
  • Experienced in application of hydrologic principles, preferable in the mineral extraction industry
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record

This position has been designated as required to file a Statement of Economic Interest in accordance with Section 2.2-3114 of the Code of Virginia. The individual accepted for employment will have to pass a drug test and successfully complete reference checks as part of the Virginia Energy pre-employment process.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in coalfield hydrology, computer mapping, and application of regulations is desirable.
