HOURS OF WORK: 4/10's, Mon-Thur. 6:00a.m. - 4:30p.m.
INTRODUCTION: Human Resources will screen applications and supplemental questionnaires. Candidates possessing the strongest skills and experience for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department for further evaluation and to determine who will be invited to the formal interview process. The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in an environmental analytical lab, with collegiate experience in a laboratory setting; experience with drinking water distribution systems, environmental sample collection, preservation, handling, and equipment calibration; experience with Word, Excel and Laboratory Information Management Systems; experience with data entry and tracking; knowledge of water sample analysis, media, and equipment.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs routine to moderately difficult laboratory procedures to support Water Quality Laboratory functions; cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes glassware and equipment; prepares media and reagents; assists in the laboratory's quality assurance program; and performs related duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods and procedures used in the operation, calibration, cleaning and sterilization of standard laboratory equipment; media and reagents typically used in a Water Quality Laboratory, standard laboratory glassware, beakers, flasks and pipettes; aseptic techniques and universal safety precautions applicable to the work; basic quality control methods and techniques; the use of safe laboratory practices and procedures.
Ability to:
Work efficiently and independently from both oral and written instructions with a minimum of direct supervision; work with precision and accuracy in recording data and maintaining records; operate, calibrate, maintain and make minor repairs to standard laboratory equipment; communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other laboratory personnel.
Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and completion of either a course in laboratory science, such as chemistry or biology, or at least six months of experience in a public health, medical, biological or Water Quality Laboratory; or an equivalent combination of training.

Employees are frequently required to sit, walk, bend and stoop and twist. Employees are occasionally required to climb, kneel and crouch.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees must frequently lift, move and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use oral and written communications skills; read documents or instructions; analyze and solve routine problems; observe and interpret data or information; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed and precise work; meet time-sensitive deadlines; and interact with other laboratory staff encountered in the course of work.

Employees work in a laboratory environment and are regularly exposed to hazardous materials, such as acids, corrosives and cleaning materials and are required to wear protective gloves, eye protection and lab coats. Employees are also exposed to hot equipment, such as hot plates, hot testing equipment and open flames and may be exposed to broken class and radioactivity. Employees are occasionally exposed to loud noise in the work environment that requires wearing hearing protection.
