Job Description
The Desert Research Institute's (DRI's) Division of Hydrologic Sciences is seeking an innovative Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in the general areas of hydrology, geology, and geochemistry. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for planning and organizing field sampling campaigns and analyzing and interpreting Water Quality data from lakes and reservoirs post-wildfire. The successful candidate must have a strong background in hydrology (groundwater/surface), geology, or geochemistry and excellent data management skills. Additional responsibilities include conducting geochemical analyses and organizing, collecting and quality control of data. The successful candidate will support ongoing and new interdisciplinary programs at DRI at the interface of hydrology, geology, chemistry, and wildfire as part of an interdisciplinary team including researchers at DRI and the US Army Corps of Engineers - Engineer Research and Development Center. The incumbent may choose to work at DRI's Reno or Las Vegas, NV campus.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. with a focus on hydrology, geology, geochemistry from an accredited institution, with a strong interdisciplinary background;
  • Familiarity with environmental Water Quality analysis, aqueous carbon cycle analysis, or emerging contaminants;
  • Experience conducting aqueous analyses for metals, nutrients, and/or emerging contaminants;
  • Experience with management and organization of hydrologic and/or geochemical datasets;
  • Experience working independently to fulfill project goals and meet project deadlines;
  • Experience working collegially in a group setting;
  • Experience publishing in peer reviewed literature;
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with GIS;
  • Experience with statistical analysis of hydrologic, geologic, or geochemical datasets;
  • Experience communicating results with stakeholders;
  • Interest in developing a research program focused on environmental Water Quality;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop oral/poster presentations and write peer-reviewed papers with limited supervision;
  • Experience participating in the development of research proposals;
  • Field-based and/or other applied experience collecting aqueous environmental samples;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Incumbent may choose to work at either the Reno or Las Vegas, NV campus, but will need to be able to travel back and forth between Reno and Las Vegas.

Salary/Benefits
The minimum annual starting salary for the Postdoctoral Researcher is $60,000. Final salary is commensurate with experience and education. The DRI Human Resources office performs periodic equity reviews to ensure that faculty salaries keep pace with the market.
DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, the option to participate in a flexible spending account or health savings account, and a retirement plan that is beyond compare. Postdocs receive a 6.2% retirement contribution match, 15 annual leave days, and a beginning balance of 15 sick leave days. You are 100% vested in the retirement plan on your first day. DRI Promotion and Career Progression
DHS Postdoctoral Researchers hired from this posting will be eligible for promotion to permanent faculty (Assistant Research Professor) upon the successful completion of their postdoc. To support the postdoc in working towards this goal, DHS will provide support for the incumbent to begin to develop their own research program as a postdoc. DRI postdocs are eligible to serve as PIs on research grants, and the incumbent will be encouraged to collaborate with colleagues across DRI and at other institutions. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to participate in both formal and informal early career mentoring programs provided by DRI Human Resources.
