Job Description
The O&M Technician - CPO is responsible for the overall operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant (WTP/WWTP) including compliance with effluent limitations established in the WWTP's waste discharge requirements and ensuring that operators-in-training (OITs) are supervised directly in accordance with the WWTP Operator Certification regulations. Perform Drinking Water Treatment and Distribution duties in compliance with State Water Board regulations.

Job Duties
Your job duties are but are not limited to, the following
  • Operates, inspects, cleans, and maintains pumps, motors, filters, and related equipment; and performs general grounds and preventive maintenance and minor repairs in and around plant facilities; and operates vehicles and other equipment as needed.
  • Update maintenance logs and perform scheduled preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Diagnose operating problems and perform or communicate necessary corrective actions.
  • Control biological processes by adjusting flow setpoints, detention times, aeration, or chemical dosing etc.
  • Inspect equipment on a regular basis.
  • Monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges.
  • Record meter and gauge readings and operational data.
  • Collect samples & send to lab for analysis.
  • Performs basic skilled laboratory testing and analysis; adheres to quality assurance programs for laboratory analysis and instrumentation.
  • Assists in training of lower-level personnel.
  • Assist in preparation of and updates to reports including records and logs, and capital improvement plans.
  • Complete and file all regulatory reports as required by the State Water Control Board or other government agencies.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with the Client, state/local agencies and associations, and the public.
  • Development, review, and use of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all operators to ensure reasonable care and judgment covering operations, maintenance, and compliance at the plant including: 1) Operator SOPs (short, clear, and concise step-by-step procedures for operators, to be used on a daily and/or weekly basis for ensuring consistent work tasks at the plant).
  • 2) Reference SOPs (narrative descriptions for operators, to be used covering operational and maintenance requirements for the plant - major treatment unit processes).

Required Qualifications
  • Possession of a minimum Grade II Certificate as a Wastewater Plant Operator from the California State Water Resources Control Board.
  • Ability to obtain T2 water and D1 water within timeline agreed upon.
  • Minimum of 5-year experience working at a water/wastewater treatment facility.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license
  • High school Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Working on-call, weekends and long hours may be required in the event of unscheduled facility issues.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience submitting reports using the California Integrated Water Quality System (CIWQS).
  • CA-SWRCB WW-2 or higher
  • CA-SWRCB T-2 or higher
  • CA-SWRCB D-2 or higher
  • Equipment and Software Knowledge
  • Computer literate as well as experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) experience.
  • Safely and effectively operate the tools and equipment used in wastewater plant maintenance and laboratory.
  • Direct Reports
    OIT if applicable.

Working Environment
  • Conditions may include working inside and/or outside. May work around office machinery with moving parts and moving objects. Working near radiant and electrical energy. Working closely with others or working alone. Working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.

Physical Job Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and operate motor equipment.

Tools and PPE Requirements
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computer and related equipment, calculator, special instrumentation, hand tools, power tools, air tools, telephone, and automobile. Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
