The Motor Carrier Safety Division works alongside the Commercial Vehicle Division in promoting the safe travel of Commercial Vehicles on state highways through education and enforcement.
About the Agency:
The Washington State Patrol is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency made up of dedicated professionals who work hard to improve the quality of life of our citizens and prevent the unnecessary loss of life on a daily basis.

  • Must be physically able to crawl under or climb around/over Commercial Vehicles in order to inspect for compliance with state safety, proper condition, weight, height, length, width, and other configuration laws
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and deploying portable scales (up to 50 lbs) in order to weigh Commercial Vehicles

More information:
The applicants selected for hire will be required to complete a phased training program designed to ensure the employee is trained on both the requirements for Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), inspection of commercial motor vehicles, as well as those aspects necessary for officer safety.
The CVEO 1 will be required to successfully complete the training and testing. The CVSA training is a federal mandated training program. Candidates who fail this training may be granted one retest, and failure of the retest is grounds for termination.
Phase One of the training will consist of on-the-job-training at the candidate's eventual work site. During this training the employee will work under the direct supervision of CVEO's to develop a basic understanding of the process of inspecting Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV).
Phase Two of training will consist of attendance at CVEO 1 Basic Training. This fourteen (14) week training program is designed to train the employee on those job skills necessary to perform the duties of a CVEO 1. This training is held at the WSP Academy in Shelton. This includes first aide, firearms training, defensive tactics, as well as training in CVSA inspection procedures. At the successful completion of Phase one and Phase two of the training, employees will graduate and return to the work site.
