Job Description
Job Title: Wasatch Front Area Secretary
Job Description:
The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Area Secretary in Salt Lake City. This position requires secretarial skills, including knowledge of billing, purchasing, record-keeping, office management, community events, human resources, payroll, etc. This individual will work with the public, local fire departments, and our staff across five counties. They will support FFSL's work managing the forests, wildfires, and sovereign lands along the Wasatch Front.
Principal Duties:
  • Provide clerical and/or administrative support and assistance.
  • Review, approve, and process fire billings through the State Fire Billing System.
  • Support human resource efforts with recruitment, onboarding, and payroll auditing.
  • Train fire departments on the Fire Billing System and the Cooperative Wildfire System.
  • Participate in public outreach events and be the public point of contact for the Area.
  • Manage our budget, perform purchasing and invoicing duties.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, including ability to compose official documents and correspondence; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective work relationships with employees, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to perform complex clerical duties requiring considerable exercise of independent judgment.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word), and Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Drive).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with accounts payable, budgeting, and basic office finance.
  • Experience with human resources recruiting and on-boarding.
  • Is able to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
  • Is highly-organized, tech-savvy, service-oriented, and works well under pressure.
  • Has great critical thinking skills and is adaptable to change.
  • Has excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Occasional evening or weekend event attendance will be required during public events.
