Job Description

The VTCSOM Library Specialist will:
-Manage the daily operations of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) Library under the supervision of the Head Librarian which may include exercising independent judgment and decision making within general guidelines.
-Provide occasional duties to support the other two Health Science Libraries (FBRI HS&T in Roanoke and VetMed in Blacksburg).
-Assume the responsibility for the VTCSOM Library Service Desk; provides direction, technical, and library resource use assistance; circulates library materials; processes and facilitates requests for purchasing materials or interlibrary loan; organizes and maintains physical collection materials, including updating item records in the catalog; manages the reserves collections; creates and updates systems used to communicate hours and services; develops, markets, and co-teaches workshops (training); creates programming and displays, in collaboration with colleagues; provides general library support; and maintains administrative records, such as library expenditures.
-Work on projects and initiatives to support the VTCSOM Library, the Health Sciences Libraries, Research, Collaboration, and Engagement, and other Library areas.

Required Qualifications

-Experience with customer service
-Familiarity with an educational and/or university environment
-Experience with effective oral and written communication skills
-Experience using inclusive practices to work effectively with colleagues and patrons across our diverse community
-Experience using search tools to locate information (e.g. databases, cataloging systems,
etc.)
-Experience using office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (or equivalent applications like Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Mail)
-Experience prioritizing and organizing work tasks, with attention to detail
-Experience collecting and compiling data (e.g. for reporting purposes)

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelor's degree or college level coursework
-Experience working in a library, bookstore, or in a healthcare setting
-Experience in coordinating work flows, managing multiple calendars, or monitoring budgets
-Experience planning and co-teaching workshops or training
-Experience designing and implementing educational programming or exhibits
-Experience with providing outreach and marketing (e.g. creation of flyers, brochures, etc.)

Additional Information

  • Work schedule of: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm or as needed
  • Ability to independently, frequently and safely move and handle library material weighing up to 30 pounds and to perform frequent manual circulation of these materials.
  • The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
