The VP of Liability Claims has direct responsibility for the Liability Claims team. S/he provides ongoing coaching and training to direct staff of claims professionals handling general Liability Claims to achieve technical excellence.  In addition, s/he is responsible for overall indemnity and legal spend for the general liability cases, accurate and timely reserving, moving cases efficiently to an appropriate resolution and quality assurance and compliance.    The successful candidate will be an essential part of our expansion into new regions and products.  Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for overseeing and evaluating coverage, litigation, contractual relationships, 50-state jurisdictional exposures and understanding the insurance regulatory environment to ensure that all Liability Claims are handled effectively.
  • Ensures optimal operational efficiencies in the management of claims, claim systems and appropriate staffing.
  • Responsible for identifying claim training needs and implementing appropriate training to help team recognize high exposure cases and risk transfer opportunities.
  • Reviews Reservation of Right and Declination letters to ensure accurate and consistent policy positions.
  • Formulates claims and litigation strategies, assigns, directs, and proactively manages counsel to develop cost effective strategies to investigate, evaluate, reserve, and bring cases to resolution.
  • Is a technical resource not only for Claims staff, but also Underwriting. Supports underwriting inquiries and information requests regarding policy construction and upcoming renewals.
  • Communicates with business partners including brokers, actuary, and finance team to keep them informed and engaged in the claims resolution process. Analyze claims trends and statistics to assist the business in proactively managing risks and exposures

  • Juris Doctor degree preferred,  Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Ten (10) years of industry experience handling claims, including five (5) years of supervisory experience, or leading a team that handles Liability Claims
  • Experience in commercial real estate including labor law and hospitality a plus.
  • In depth knowledge of claim handling procedures, claim performance strategies and claim best practices. 
  • Strong abilities in evaluating coverage, litigation, contractual relationships, 50-state jurisdictional exposures
  • Knowledge of law and insurance regulations in various jurisdictions and demonstrates an understanding of the insurance regulatory environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills
  • Effective decision-making skills, including the ability to recognize, analyze, and improve claims performance against standards and goals.
  • Claims operations experience with the ability to drive process, best practices, and operational strategy from both an operational and technical perspective.
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Solution oriented team player with a strong relationship management skill set working with both internal and external stakeholders and customers
