The Enterprise Communications and Marketing Experience Technology team, part of the US Consumer and Enterprise Digital & Data Technology (USCDT) in the Technology Organization at American Express, brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital and omni-channel communications and storage experience engineering, Marketing Technology, and global brand management, and advertising technology for the company. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments.

The VP Marketing Engineering, Technology will report into the Vice President – Enterprise Communications & Marketing Experience Technology (ECMXT), and will help us to move faster by identifying, driving and leading initiatives that will accelerate our success and scale. We lead programs and liaise with partners across the organization to ensure we execute on opportunities for increased speed, efficiency, integration and impact.

In This Role, You'll Get To

Lead and Drive Marketing Efficiencies with a sharpened focus on MarTech 2.0 (Unify and Transform) Marketing Value Co-Creation streams, while heavily influencing a series of Enterprise Technology capabilities within the Marketing Data (e.g. Performance Analytics, Intelligence and AI/ML, Experimentation frameworks) to support the end-to-end development and execution of Amex's unified data strategy across existing Customer and Prospect ecosystems. This role is critical to our Tech Strategy with a focus on data and enabling the transformation of American Express’ Marketing Transformation vision.

On Your First Day, We'll Expect You To Have

  • Collaborate with business and technology leaders to lead our Unify and Transform vision for the Marketing Ecosystem with sharpened focus into Marketing Efficiencies, and Marketing Data (Performance Analytics, Intelligence) . The candidate must have the ability to ensure architectural integrity, provide clear technical oversight and strong governance of the technology platforms
  • Define core engineering KPIs for the team
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to drive technical vision and strategy aligned to our product roadmap
  • Foster innovation and experimentation, delivering software solutions that meet or exceed customer and stakeholder expectations, often helping shape business requirements in a manner that optimally leverages technology teams
  • Build a hiring plan to grow your team and ensure they have a diverse mix of skills, experience, and backgrounds
  • Cultivate a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement, leading changes that drive efficiencies in existing engineering and delivery process improvements
  • Work with Platform owners to assimilate new technology and delivery methods into scalable software solutions, leveraging and contributing to engineering best practices across the company

It's Great If You Have

  • Possess a good blend of business and technical aptitude and a strong desire to learn new technologies and trends
  • 10+ years of demonstrated progressive experience building and shipping large scale products
  • Extensive experience leading software engineering teams in a fast paced, complex, and dynamic global environment
  • Strong understanding of Marketing Technology Stack, Data and Analytics Technology Stacks, Architectural Frameworks and Design Patterns, Web development and technologies omnichannel APIs and services
  • Proven experience attracting, hiring, retaining, and leading top engineering talent by building high performing teams with a strong engineering culture
  • Steadfast drive to innovate in process and software to better meet the needs of our customers
  • Experience as a hands-on architect with the ability to design and architect fault tolerant and highly available platforms
  • Software architectural vision and the ability to communicate technical strategy with a pragmatic roadmap, balanced with customer delivery

Also critical to your success:

  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to define and communicate a clear technical strategy for point of arrival systems, accompanied by a roadmap with distinct timelines for delivery.
  • Ability to attract, retain, and grow top engineering talent.
  • Pragmatic approach to decision making; the passion and ability to advocate for technical work yet recognize when customer delivery must take a priority
  • Proficiency in modern technology architecture, infrastructure, and software practices

Salary Range: $210,000.00 to $300,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
