Job description

NEPM enriches people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives.
About Us
At New England Public Media, we aspire to be the hometown station for western Massachusetts. NEPM's mission is to enrich lives here through programming that nurtures community, civility, and curiosity. Our current programming is as compelling and diverse as the region we serve: public radio and TV services, a 24-7 classical channel, jazz shows, education programs, live events, podcasts and more.
About the Role
As Vice President of Content & Audience Strategy, you'll lead the teams that create the content and programming for NEPM. Your strategic and creative thinking, paired with an analytical perspective, operational know-how, and broad knowledge of the media landscape, will help these teams operate effectively and have fun as we work to get more people to rely on NEPM every day.
The heart of this role will be audience service: making sure our programming is valuable to our loyal fans and inviting newcomers all the time. You'll work with a talented team that includes journalists, editors, producers, and hosts to create can't-miss content and experiences across multiple platforms.
This position reports directly to the President of NEPM and is based in western Massachusetts. A hybrid work schedule is an option.
About You
You are an exceptional listener who can provide the leadership, feedback, and resources that are necessary for our staff's success. You've managed diverse teams to help them achieve their best work and celebrated their wins. You're a champion of diversity, equity and inclusion in the work and at the workplace. You've helped heritage brands find new opportunities in the digital space. You're fully committed to the need for quality, trustworthy journalism in a healthy democracy. Your vision for how to blend what we make locally with what we take from our partners and present it to our audiences will help us create the public media service of the 21st century.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop the strategy to grow audience across our core brands: 88.5 NEPM, Classical NEPM, and NEPM TV, informed by audience data, trends and user habits.
  • Provide leadership and vision to NEPM's local content portfolio, offering strategic direction and feedback to the journalists in our newsroom, local shows team, music staff, and education department.
  • Foster a welcoming and collaborative work environment with a clear commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Work effectively with Marketing and Operations teams to optimize our workflow and ensure that users have a great experience with NEPM on all platforms.
  • Represent NEPM and establish relationships with the diverse communities we reach and create partnerships that help us serve new and existing audiences.
  • Ensure that content adheres to journalistic ethics and standards while upholding a clear separation between editorial content creation and other departments and funding sources.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC and other regulatory requirements and help maintain accurate reporting and our public file.
  • Create and manage department budgets and provide direction to help make our programming and content operations efficient and effective.
  • Hire, train, and mentor leaders of content teams.
  • Ably represent the station at board meetings, professional conferences, and other public events.
  • Participate in the station's on-air and off-air fundraising activities, as needed.
  • Offer ideas for fundraising, grants, corporate support, and other revenue development, as needed.

SKILL SET
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent administrative and managerial skills.
  • Familiarity with public media programming and ethical standards strongly preferred.
  • Ability to create a culture of innovation and creativity.
  • Ability to collaboratively lead complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a management team and under deadlines.
  • Knowledge and interest in western Massachusetts preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required. Minimum 10 years' experience in media or content creation, including managing journalists and content producers radio, TV or digital is required.
JOB SPECIFICS
Hybrid role
To excel in this role, candidates should be open to residing in western Massachusetts.
Attendance at evening and weekend events to support NEPM's outreach efforts is required.
