Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Workforce Development
The Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development plays a pivotal role in achieving equitable outcomes for students in a student-ready college. The Vice President champions teaching and learning excellence as the top academic officer, ensuring the strategic alignment of academic programs and workforce needs. The leader oversees the full development and implementation of workforce, credit career, and transfer pathways to broaden and enhance economic development in the College's service areas and in the larger Commonwealth of Virginia. This individual provides overall leadership for curriculum development and delivery, learning outcomes assessment, faculty hiring and retention, faculty professional development, budget development and management, policies and procedures, and ensures adherence to institutional and programmatic accreditation standards. The Vice President will be a steadfast advocate for assisting campus stakeholders in understanding their role in student success and achieving desired and equitable student outcomes.
The Vice President will join Piedmont Virginia Community College at an exciting and pivotal time that presents significant opportunity to expand access, degree completion and student post-graduation success in collaboration with campus partners. This leader reports directly to the President. The Vice President should have a proven history as a visionary leader who has successfully turned strategy into quantifiable improved student success outcomes. Furthermore, the Vice President will have experience inspiring others and building consensus across internal and external stakeholder groups to achieve bold visions, strategic and operational leadership, and the integrity and compassion to exemplify the College's mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a member of the College's executive leadership team and contribute to organizational planning, evaluation, and resource allocation decisions in support of the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the college.
  • Provide overall leadership for the development, delivery, implementation, and assessment of curricula, programs, the Betty Sue Jessup Library, the Frank Friedman Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, shared responsibilities for dual enrollment, online education, and services that both anticipate and respond to the service region's academic and workforce training needs with a continuing focus on innovation, curricular and pedagogical relevance, and excellence.
  • Champion, advance, and evaluate academic and student success practices to enhance the teaching and learning environment and support student success outcomes. Lead faculty in anchoring curricula, pedagogy, and student success in current research and best practices. Pilot and assess curricular, pedagogical, and scheduling innovations enabled by digital technology; expand access with success through online education.
  • Align resources and expenditures to achieve significantly improved results in student outcomes, implementing well-designed practices at scale; exhibit sound fiscal responsibility and stewardship of the resources entrusted to the College. Lead, develop, and manage division-specific budgets and assigned grants. Direct and manage Workforce Solutions' operations and budget execution with the goal of being profitable.
  • Build on a culture of collaboration, excellent communication, and shared governance. Support and maintain effective, collaborative relationships among instructional divisions, student affairs, and the College administration, faculty, staff, and students. Ensure timely and consistent communication appropriately geared toward respective stakeholders.
  • Expand and sustain partnerships and collaborations with K-12 partners, business/industry, community-based organizations, service agencies, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and agencies that drive long-term mission impact, yield economic growth and opportunities for students and community members.
  • Be highly visible and involved having both an internal and external presence in support of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development. Represent the College on internal and external committees in alignment with core responsibilities. Serve as the College's primary representative to Virginia Community College System in all matters of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development.
  • Participate actively in the recruitment, appointment, and retention of faculty and other professionals. Recommend promotions and terminations to the President as appropriate. Lead with an orientation toward professional development, support, and advocacy for their team and areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a data champion and principal liaison for Academic Affairs and Workforce Development to institutional research in support of academic-focused data cultivation, reporting, and visualization.
  • Administer the preparation of the Faculty Handbook, the Adjunct Faculty Handbook, the College Catalog, the schedule of classes, program maps, and other publications as required by the President. Prepare the college academic working calendar.
  • Be informed and engaged in higher education trends and the impact on student success including the use of technology to promote success and completion. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including program and college accreditations.
  • Lead strategic division or campuswide projects as assigned by the president.

Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • An earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university in an appropriate field
  • At least five years of experience in academic and/or workforce senior administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing and promoting diversity
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as well as independently
  • Proven ability to lead, make decisions and work consultatively
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards in student learning and faculty development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and future of community colleges
  • A combination of education and experience demonstrating minimum qualifications
  • Regional and/or program accreditation experience
  • Minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.

Additional Considerations
  • At least ten years ofexperience in academic and/or workforce senior administration with demonstrated innovation and results
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique nature of the College's service region and community
