Job description

We are seeking a Veterinary Technician Assistant. The purpose of this position is to provide animal husbandry and non-human primate enrichment to two breeding colonies of non-human primates.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine animal husbandry procedures to include cleaning housing areas, providing feed and bedding.
  • Provide daily enrichment for nonhuman primates. Includes creative use of food and physical devices to enrich the physical environment.
  • Assist with collection, maintenance and compliance of written documentation and records.
  • Preparing areas for new animal arrivals.
  • Assist with the administration of drugs used for restraint and treatment.
  • Assist with intradermal tuberculin testing, observation and documentation of test results.
  • Assist with collecting required biological samples for analysis and treatment.
  • Obtain routine weights for multiple nonhuman primate species such as but not limited to macaques, baboons, marmosets, and squirrel monkeys.
  • Assist veterinary staff, research staff, and Animal Resources personnel as needed. This includes provisions of medical care/treatments, anesthesia or research manipulations.
  • Provide assistance with receiving and shipping laboratory animals.
  • There is some responsibility for routine farm maintenance including using a tractor and pickup truck on the farm.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A.A. degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science or Biology preferred.
  • Experience working with non-human primates or large animal species preferred.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must be able to assist with drug calculations, read and write.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team and become more independent after the first year of employment with adequate training.
  • Must be able to assist with perform manipulations with specific techniques, such as but not limited to intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Must be able to work at least one weekend day per workweek.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00-$18.90-$22.50 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
