Position: Veterinarian – Full Time

Department: Clinic

Classification: Full Time (40 Hours) – Exempt Salary

Routt County Humane Society (RCHS), an open admission, socially conscious animal shelter, is in beautiful Steamboat Springs, CO. With an annual intake of 500-700 homeless animals and the operation of a community wellness clinic, the ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment where every day provides new experiences and challenges.

As a veterinarian, find motivation and purpose in enhancing your skills within the dynamic environment of both shelter medicine and a community wellness clinic. Collaborating with shelter personnel and pet owners from the community, you will play a vital role in mitigating animal suffering by ensuring optimal and affordable veterinary care for shelter and community pets while working to prevent pet overpopulation and homelessness.

Position Summary:

Providing high-quality medical care to shelter and community animals, the Veterinarian is responsible for oversight of the daily operations of the Organization’s Veterinary Services and Community Wellness Clinic. Responsibilities include managing the health of the Shelter population, the surgical program, including shelter and community pets, and the management of disease control protocols. The position serves as a key member of the Shelter administrative team and oversees the veterinary operations as well as supervision of the part-time veterinarian and veterinary technicians. Additionally, the Veterinarian will foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing, while forging robust external connections with community veterinarians. Working closely with the administrative team and the RCHS Board of Directors, the veterinarian will strive to form strong partnerships and drive collective success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provides outstanding veterinary care to homeless and owned pets, including physical exams, diagnostics, surgical procedures, treatment plans, shelter and owner requested euthanasia, and participation in off-site mobile spay/neuter/vaccination clinics.

· Direct and monitor all aspects of the RCHS shelter and community veterinary program and collaborates with shelter staff to maximize the effectiveness of service delivery.

· Manages and develops an effective staff, providing effective communication, leadership, guidance, and resources.

· Perform surgical procedures regularly including shelter and community high quality, high volume spay/neuter, dentistry, and various soft tissue surgeries.

· Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses. Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of RCHS.

· Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA, DORA and PACFA rules and regulations.

· Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, and as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter and wellness clinic.

· Helps coordinate mobile clinic events with some weekends required.

Qualifications:

· Must be currently licensed to practice in the State of Colorado (or obtain license soon after hiring) and maintain certification.

· Minimum one-year experience as an animal shelter veterinarian with high quality/high volume surgical experience.

· Must be qualified and eligible to obtain and retain DEA license.

· Knowledge of population and individual animal health management, disease prevention and control, and epidemiology strongly desired.

· Proven decision-making and diagnostic skills and an interest in pursuing treatment options with limited resources.

· Strong customer service, communication, emotional intelligence, work ethic and integrity skills required.

· Bilingual English/Spanish reading, writing, understanding, and speaking is a plus and includes a wage premium.

· Ability to foster a positive work environment and be viewed as a motivator and leader. Experience in molding and developing staff into a cohesive team while holding employees accountable for job performance.

· Serve as the radiation officer as required by the State of Colorado.

· Familiarity with standard medical equipment.

· Compute proficiency skills, including Idexx veterinary software.

Physical Requirements:

· Standing for extended periods of time.

· Ability to lift fifty pounds. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with reasonable accommodation.

· Exposure to high noise levels.

· Subject to animal bites and scratches.

· Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander and feces.

· Exposure to radiation in association with performing radiology procedures.

· Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, standing, climbing stairs, and walking.

· Repetitive motion associated with medical and surgical care.

Compensation:

The expected hiring range is $90,000-$105,000 annually at Full Time 40-hour status commensurate with market, experience, and equity.
