Job Description: Primary Care DVM


FLSA Status: Exempt

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Medical:
  2. Utilizes physical examinations, lab workups, and consultation with colleagues to perform differential diagnoses.
  3. Performs medical procedures, such as (list is not comprehensive):
  4. Routine surgeries (weekly).
  5. Routine wellness care (e.g., vaccinations, prescribing preventative medications).
  6. Treatment for acute and chronic health conditions (e.g., ear infections, diabetes management).
  7. Emergency stabilization of critical patients (infrequent; may be called upon for this if Critical Care DVM is not available to perform procedure).
  8. Communicates with clients warmly and clearly, explaining available treatment options while being sensitive to their emotional needs and financial constraints.
  9. Promptly, accurately, and comprehensively updates medical records.
  10. Participates in frequent continuing education opportunities to ensure personal practice of medicine is well honed and in line with current best practices.
  11. Leadership:
  12. Collaborates with management to set hospital policies and procedures, then consistently adheres to them.
  13. Is mindful of wastage and the efficient usage of hospital resources, taking proactive steps to avoid incurring unnecessary expenses.
  14. Utilizes support staff for the efficient provision of high quality care (e.g., appropriate delegation of tasks, issuance of clear guidance).
  15. Acts as a mentor and coach for both support staff and fellow DVMs:
  16. Confers with colleagues to share medical insights and so improve quality of care.
  17. Facilitates skill development by providing performance feedback, teaching in the moment, and sharing accumulated knowledge.
  18. Role models appropriate behaviors.
  19. Miscellaneous:
  20. Has reliable method of transportation to get to shifts on time.
  21. With the exception of people with disabilities that prevent them from safely operating a motor vehicle, applicants are required to have a valid drivers license and a safe driving history. This is necessary because DVMs may need to perform occasional house calls, drive to conferences, etc. If you have a disability that prevents you from driving, we would be happy to make a reasonable accommodation.
  22. Need to be willing and able to work evenings and weekends. We are open seven (7) days a week and you are expected to work at least 50% of the weekend day shifts in any given month.


Marginal Job Functions:

  1. After attending continuing education opportunities, DVMs are encouraged to share what they have learned in order to improve the entire hospitals level of patient care.
  2. Delivers in-house medical training to staff.
  3. Is active in professional organizations.
  4. Assists with the visibility and image of the hospital by participating in community activities that focus on the veterinary profession (including but not limited to pet emergency teams, 4H Fair, wildlife rescue organizations, annual hospital charity events, etc.).
  5. Evaluates and suggests new, useful products we should carry, in order to optimize clients home care of patients.
  6. Writes one blog per quarter and periodically reviews the website in order to keep information current and the community informed.
  7. Attends both DVM and Staff Meetings as an active participant, encouraging staff members involvement.
  8. Completes special projects on an as-needed basis. For example, each DVM is expected to share responsibility for ongoing tasks such as writing protocols, assisting in staff training, working with externship trainees, etc.


Physical Demands and Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to animals which may bite, scratch, or otherwise cause physical injury to employee.
  • May be exposed to anesthesia gases, zoonotic and chemical hazards, and radiation.
  • In order to ensure the safe and effective performance of this job and the successful operation of the business, English fluency is necessary for this position.
  • Ability to move around the building to access drawers, cabinets, etc.
  • May need to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods (i.e., up to several hours) while working on patients, using computer, phone, etc.
  • Must be able to efficiently operate computers, phones, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to observe and accurately discern fine details at close range (e.g., handwritten notes; patient features; etc.).
  • Position requires frequent communication with coworkers and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information during these communications.
  • Must be able to perceive physical safety/OSHA hazards in the environment.


Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice as a DVM in Michigan (required).
