The Position
Under general supervision, a Utilities Water Maintenance Mechanic will perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of drinking and irrigation water production, distribution and treatment facilities mechanical and electro-mechanical machinery and equipment; and will do related work as required.
Work Performed
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Install, replace, repair and adjust pumps, valves, pipes, flow meters, chlorinators, pumping equipment, pressure gauges and other appurtenant equipment of water production, distribution and treatment facilities.
- Operate lathe, milling machine and other machine tools in repair of large pumps, variable speed drives, motors, chain drives, sewerage lift station and related equipment.
- Replace packing in pumps and valves and bearings in motors, pumps, natural gas engines and other equipment.
- Maintain and repair piping systems and to do related plumbing and pipefitting tasks.
- Lubricate equipment and check for malfunctions.
- Use gas and/or arc welding equipment to heat, cut, braze, and weld.
- Install pumps, variable speed drives and motors, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment.
- Perform general building maintenance and repair, including rough carpentry, pouring and finishing concrete, painting and related work.
- Use of a variety of hand and power hand tools, and may operate overhead traveling and truck cranes.
- Read plans and drawings pertaining to the water production, distribution and treatment facilities.
- May act as lead worker directing semi-skilled and unskilled employees on construction and maintenance work.
- Participate in related divisional cross-training efforts.
- Operate, keep clean and perform minor maintenance to assigned City vehicle.
Qualifications
Experience: Three years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of heavy mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, vari-speed and chain drives, lift stations and all other related equipment.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- May require possession of or the ability to obtain an appropriate valid California Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator’s License based upon operational need and the duties assigned.
- Possession of a Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Must be able to obtain full certification requirements within eighteen (18) months of employment.
