The Role in Brief

User Interface Designer

We are seeking a creative and passionate team player to help definition and execution of design standards that will optimize scale and end user experience. As a member of the User Experience team, you will use your deep interaction, visual and prototyping skills to define, apply and document consistent visual and interaction standards across our Customer Relationship Management product suite. Your solutions will meaningfully impact a wide range of users including students, advisors, instructors, and administrators in both mobile and desktop responsive environments.

You’ll work closely with the User Experience team, Product Managers, Product Owners, UI Engineers and our Technology leadership to align, vet and evangelize design systems solutions. Your solutions will maximize both consistency and usability across the application and build on the dominant patterns already in use throughout the system. You are a strong communicator of your design solutions and rationales and can think holistically across a unified system.

This role may be fully remote within the continental U.S., or based in our offices in Washington DC or Richmond VA, and will report into the Senior Director, User Experience.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Define, design and document visual standards and interaction patterns consistent with use cases found across the application
  • Leverage user research, UX best practice and common patterns to inform solutions
  • Present design thinking and rationale through key deliverables to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with User Experience, Product Management, UI Engineering and other stakeholders to define intuitive user interactions
  • Guide User Experience, Product Management and Engineering in the consistent application of standards and evangelize design system adoption
  • Review product development work in progress, highlight successful application of standards, and track opportunities to bring UI up to standard
  • Collaborate with engineers and the UI team to support component library and pattern enhancements
  • Oversee and steward governance of our evolving and maturing standards and patterns
  • Maintain Sketch component and pattern library
  • Provide inspiration to your colleagues and stakeholders by proposing new ideas and next-generation solutions
  • Provide direct support on product design assignments as needed

  • This role does not require writing code

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years working in UX field
  • 2+ years of professional experience with enterprise web-apps or education
  • 1+ years experience working on design systems
  • Deep understanding of the fundamental principles of User Interface design
  • Portfolio including User Interface design projects and design system solutions
  • High proficiency with design and prototyping tools (e.g., Sketch, Invision, Figma, etc.)
  • Experience designing on multiple platforms (Web, iOS, Android)
  • Experience working within common web frameworks, and understanding of the limits and capabilities of web technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex requirements into User Interface designs for web applications
  • Proven technical aptitude, product common sense, and curiosity combined with a genuine love for products, people, and user experience

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, with a focus in one or more of the following fields: graphic design, communications design, web design, digital design
  • Knowledge of Agile/Lean UX methodologies or experience working on highly collaborative teams
  • Experience working with large, distributed, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Extensive experience with UI patterns and interactive design principles for both web and mobile applications
  • Demonstrated excellence with regard to application of layout, typography, and color
  • Ability to balance good design processes with lean/agile methodology
  • Ability to successfully manage a design project from start to finish and to produce results independently as well as collaboratively
  • Strong time management and project management skills
  • Familiarity with Accessibility and inclusive design
