US Sailing’s Offshore department works to facilitate various big boat Rating and Handicapping services. These include the issuance of the ORC, ORR, and IRC rating rules in the US. The office works closely with owners, measurers, and marine professionals to measure and accurately represent boats in the various handicapping systems. The office also issues certified sail numbers per the Racing Rules of Sailing. US Sailing Offshore is responsible for educating the sailing community about measurement protocols, rating handicapping rules, scoring methods, and safety protocols.
The Position:
- Winter/Spring 2024
- Start: Immediately
- End: Mid-May (with opportunity to extend to Mid-August)
- 8-10 Hours a week (flexible)
- On site in Bristol, RI at US Sailing Office
- Unpaid internship, may receive credit from University
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Assist US Sailing Offshore team with day-to-day operations of issuing rating certificates for the ORC, ORR, and IRC rating rules including:
- Assist in managing applications, measurement data collection, and data verification
- Manage invoicing and payment collection for rating rules
- Assist boat owners through the rating certification process
- Support the Offshore and Foundation team with coordination and issuance of USA sail numbers
- Create informative content slides for Offshore website detailing the following (data to be included would be provided, no prior knowledge on subjects necessary):
- Measurement Protocols
- Performance Curve Scoring Models
- Understanding your rating certificate
- Etc.
- Maintain and support Offshore database
- Develop reports for Offshore team and race organizers
Qualifications:
- Student or recent graduate with a Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) major(s) preferred but not required
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Working proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Working proficiency in Google Suite
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Experience using Excel/Google Sheets to manipulate and analyze large data sets preferred
- Strong experience coding in Access to manipulate data and create query pages using Visual Basic for Access is a plus
- Knowledge, experience, or interest in Offshore sailing is a plus
