Job description

The U. S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest district courts among the country's 94 federal judicial districts. The district courts, combined with the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices: Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen and Victoria.

The Student Intern Program provides interns the opportunity to gain valuable work experience; introduces them to careers in the federal judiciary; and allows them the opportunity to earn a salary while performing a valuable service to the federal judiciary.


Classification Level: Court Personnel System, Classification Level (CL) 22.
Starting pay rate and position location listed below.
Terms of Employment: Full-Time or Part-Time Temporary, Excepted Service

Appointment Duration: This is a temporary appointment, to last no less than three months and not to exceed a year and a day. Appointments will be reevaluated based on performance, agency need, and budgetary concerns. Start date and work schedule to be negotiated. Work schedule must include at least 20 hours per week.

  • Perform duties such as greeting visitors/clients in person or on the telephone and directing them to the appropriate individual.
  • Processes outgoing mail. Receives, screens and routes all incoming mail to appropriate staff member.
  • Prepares and copies reports for officers and delivers to judges' chambers.
  • Scanning, copying, filing, stamping, and locating files and documents.
  • Assists with data entry functions.
  • Assists in conducting criminal record checks through local or national law enforcement databases.
  • Independently, or with direction, helps prepare and compose letters/correspondence essential to the mission-critical function of officers.
  • May attend court to observe hearings and witness court-related activities related to bail decisions, supervision, sentencing process, etc. and may occasionally accompany an officer to an affiliated program site or field office.
  • Other duties, as appropriate and assigned.
Applicants for this position must be able to deal effectively with the Judges of the District Court, managers, coworkers and the public. The individual selected must understand and abide by the rules, policies and regulations of the Court. General computer and word processing skills are required, including a working proficiency in Microsoft Office products. A team attitude, attention to detail and a willingness to adapt to a changing work environment are essential to maintain the Court's quality standards. Professional approach and attire are required.
Relatives of current employees or judges of the Southern District of Texas cannot be considered.
Education:
To qualify, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent, be a student enrolled or recent graduate, in a degree program such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, business or public administration. Successful applicants may be required to periodically provide proof of college enrollment.
Background Investigation:
As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must successfully complete a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background investigation, defined as a technical fingerprint search of the criminal history records of the FBI national fingerprint database.Conditions of Employment:

Although Federal Government Civil Service classifications/regulations do not apply, court employees are entitled to similar benefits as other Federal Government employees. Eligibility for benefits will be dependent on type and length of appointment.
