Job Description
DailyMail.com is looking for an energetic, skilled and experienced editor to join our growing politics team in the build-up to the 2024 presidential election and beyond.
This is a rare opportunity for a smart, prolific journalist to edit and write for the English-speaking world's most-read newspaper website and work with an expanding politics team at the heart of covering the American government.
You will cover news of the day whether it breaks on Capitol Hill, at the White House, in Cabinet agencies or on the campaign trail. The role will be based in DailyMail.com's New York headquarters but will include frequent travel to Washington.
The stories the team produces every day range from votes in Congress to major developments in National Security and the workings in the West Wing.
Our editors and reporters, who receive competitive salaries, thrive in a deadline-rich environment, and cover every story with the urgency of breaking news.
They're natural storytellers and understand how to communicate in words, photographs and video for a website where visual presentation of stories are paramount.
Outstanding candidates should also be able to demonstrate their ability to balance editorial objectives in a fast-paced news environment.
Our News Editor, Politics, will also have experience managing schedules and running live coverage of major events.
They will be able to work flexible hours and be ready to cover news whenever it breaks.
They will be able to write sharp and entertaining copy and headlines and help our reporters with ideas, projects and features.
They will have an extensive list of contacts, will be able to help our reporters get exclusive stories and interviews and be able to display and unmatched news judgement for a website read by millions around the world.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Help to manage team of political reporters and run the daily coverage of our D.C. team.
  • Write headlines and edit stories for our hugely popular homepage and social media channels.
  • Pitch ideas and projects on a wide range of topics for our reporters to cover.
  • Work jointly with the executive team to plan the editorial direction and workflow.
  • Exercise news judgement and use in-house analytics tools.
  • Collaborating with global editorial team to obtain content from the global desks which may be of interest to the U.S. readership.
  • Travel to Washington for meetings and to cover particular events.

We are looking for professionals with the following:
  • Passion for the DailyMail.com brand, its editorial voice and global audience
  • Experience covering U.S. politics for a news organization that operates in real-time.
  • At least six years or more experience managing teams in a major newsroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment whilst delivering accuracy and accurate presentation.
  • Capability to write and edit in a pressurised environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Congress, the White House and federal election campaigns
  • Ideas of how DailyMail.com can improve and grow its political coverage.
