Summary
The Department of Biostatistics at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan invites applications for an HPC System Administrator. The duties of this role are split between system administration and user support. The Department of Biostatistics has a modest-sized HPC cluster (~60 compute node) for which you will serve as the sole administrator. In addition to configuring and managing the day-to-day operation of the cluster, you will support users in their use of this cluster. This includes user account creation, onboarding, advising on workflow, troubleshooting, installing software, etc. The userbase consists mostly of graduate students but also professional staff and faculty. In addition to the Biostatistics cluster, you will support users from the broader School of Public Health using research resources provided by the Advanced Research Computing (ARC, arc.umich.edu) department. The University uses a model in which ARC runs the services, and IT professionals in the various Schools and Colleges support users from their own institutions. You will onboard users, respond to help requests, install software, and advise on all things related to research computing.
Responsibilities*
Biostatistics Cluster
  • Serve as sole administrator for CentOS-based, on-premises, departmental HPC cluster.
  • Manage OS installation and configuration through PXE/TFTP/Kickstart and Ansible
  • Compile, install, and manage scientific software, mainly R, python, and genomics applications.
  • Advise, onboard, and support Faculty, Staff, and Students using the department's cluster.
  • Provide assistance with workflow design, parallelization, and code debugging.

ARC Services Support
  • Provide user support for services provided by the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) department. These include HPC clusters, storage resources, etc.
  • Onboard new users by teaching them the concepts of HPC clusters and assist in setting up initial workflows.

Other
  • Host a series of workshops on cluster computing topics.
  • Present a few guest lectures in courses each semester on research computing topics.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications*
  • Knowledge of configuration management systems like Ansible (currently used), salt, puppet, etc.
  • Knowledge of Linux and HPC clusters and workload managers like Slurm.
  • Previous experience installing scientific software.

Work Locations
This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.
Underfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Senior Salary: $84,773 - $104,720
Intermediate Salary: $63,750 - $97,500
